Librarianship and the professional model : a sociological tutorial and critique.- Library Science with a slant to Documentation and Information Studies, 36(3). It is a very well studied and well written paper. To be able to give competent comments I myself must be competent in the field. You have advanced too much ahead of me which is my pleasure and pride. I like your concluding remark very well. For last 15 or more years, i have not been into any studies. Relaxing and improving my physical and mental status through Vipassana and other forms of exercises has been my main involvement, because i did not want to be a drag on my busy children. One of my classmates Mrs Sheela Nadakarni was a librarian at Bombay university.and my another friend's husband Mr Deshpande was quite a competent librarian. We all tend to be obsessed with past either good or bad , pleasant or unpleasant …. and land up or end up for no where to go. End up and find no way or time for the apparent or the present. It so happens that we are so much carried away by the past the past that went wrong …. and we miss the bus of the present which is more real and which is more under our control. It is time we realize that what went right or wrong was just alright ….what is infront of us right now is important because …… that was our future some time back and that would be our past after some time. Let us enjoy the present…..feel the present…..give our best to the present….which will take care of our future past and future future. Trust me, be fully present in the present, be smiling. The power of problems so overwhelming and over powering that we get lost in tremendous grief. We succumb to problems …. We rarely are able to see the green pastures that are opened up by each and every small or big problem. Problems can work for us for fine tuning of our skills and talents and innate strengths. Problems are a blessing …. Only thing we should not give up on our dreams and wishes. Hold on to your dream …. Hold on to your inner urges and go ahead ….. if nothing works for you …. Just hold on … every thing will be alright … just hold on….wait what you cannot resolve … solve …. Face …. God enables … God facilitates in such a way that …. A way is found once again under so much of grief and sorrow and darkness. There comes the small back … there comes a new hope. Librarians are people who normally don't succumb to problems …. I fully agree with Sukhabodhananda when he says …."irrespective of the best effort one puts in, you have to face both success and failure at different times." Abstract:
The term "Intellectual Property" basically means "creation of mind" such as machine, process, design etc with creative or useful output. IP, due to its intangible nature, gets protection under law as patent, copyright, trademark; industrial design etc provided it fulfils basic requirements for protection as prescribed by the legislation. On one hand, IP if protected and exploited sensibly is a valuable asset and can fetch great revenues but on the other hand infringement of third party's IP with or without knowledge can be disastrous. Therefore, need of the hour is to get oneself aware on various aspects of IPR so that it can be used as a tool to generate revenues.
About The Speaker:
Bindu Sharma has eight years of research experience working in reputed institutes of the country such as National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and Jubilant Biosys (P) Ltd., Bangalore. She founded Origiin IP Solutions in the year 2006 and has been handling work such as various patent searches, Patent drafting, filing and prosecution at IPO and PCT, office actions including opposition and revocation petitions, drafting agreements relating transfer of technology, registration of copyright, trademark, conducting IP Audit, framing IP Policies and processes etc for knowledge based companies and academics.
She has been speaker in several conferences, symposiums and has conducted various awareness workshops on IPR for academics as well as corporates. She is visiting faculty in many reputed colleges in India.

Analysis. We examine the costs and potential benefits of the major alternative models for scholarly publishing, including subscription publishing, open access publishing and self-archiving. Adopting a formal approach to modelling the scholarly communication process and identifying activity costs, this paper presents activity and system-wide costs for each of the alternative publishing models. It then explores the potential impacts of enhanced access on returns to R&D.
Results. We find that different scholarly publishing models could make a material difference to the costs faced by various parties and to the returns on investment in R&D that might be realised.
Conclusion. It seems likely that more open access could have substantial benefits in the longer term. While the benefits may be lower during a transitional period they would be likely to be positive for both open access publishing and self-archiving alternatives.

John W. Houghton, Centre for Strategic Economic Studies, Victoria University, Australia, recently published The costs and potential benefits of alternative scholarly publishing models.

Analysis. We examine the costs and potential benefits of the major alternative models for scholarly publishing, including subscription publishing, open access publishing and self-archiving. Adopting a formal approach to modelling the scholarly communication process and identifying activity costs, this paper presents activity and system-wide costs for each of the alternative publishing models. It then explores the potential impacts of enhanced access on returns to R&D.
Results. We find that different scholarly publishing models could make a material difference to the costs faced by various parties and to the returns on investment in R&D that might be realised.
Conclusion. It seems likely that more open access could have substantial benefits in the longer term. While the benefits may be lower during a transitional period they would be likely to be positive for both open access publishing and self-archiving alternatives.
