Suma Chitnis’s M.N.Srinivas Memorial Lecture : A Sociological Narrative worth reading!

This is a reflection of a practicing librarian on M.N.Srinivas Memorial Lecture delivered by sociologist Suma Chitnis at Cuttuck. Citation : Suma Chitnis/Lessons from the field (M.N.Srinivas Memorial lecture delivered at Indian Sociological Society Conference at Revenshaw University, Cuttack 02-12-2010), Sociological Bulletin 60(2), May-August 2011.

For over 15 years or so I have been a life member of Indian Sociological Society. I get news letters and Sociological bulletins regularly wherever I happen to be.  Inspite of undoubted interest in the discipline of Sociology I opted to be a Librarian some 26 years ago.  But my fascination for sociological imagination has not faded to this day.  I would not read every thing that is published in Sociological Bulletin, but venture to read, glance atleast some papers now and then.  So for long I have opted to call myself as a student of Sociology.  My feed back to Sociology? Nothing except reading Sociology now and then and publishing two papers  (reviews) on Sociology of Library profession.
Any way coming to the lecture delivered by Prof.Suma Chitnis I have heard of her as a Sociologist, as a researcher on, “Teaching as a profession.”  Anyone coming closer to the studies on professions draws my attention and more so if it happens to be a sociologist.  Prof.Ambarao Uplaonkar (Gulbarga) used to talk about professor Suma often.
Prof.Suma starts her lecture by acknowledging M.N.Srinivas as a profound scholar, an excellent researcher and a great teacher and mentor.  Incidentally I happened to work on the bibliometrics and informetrics of writings / publications of Srinivas. It was my privilege to get a brief biography and list of papers and other publications personally from him. Unfortunately I could not communicate / send him a copy of the published paper.  After retirement from active service the many an academician / academic administrator become more matured, contented and worth emulating.  Hats off, at the age of 78 Suma delivered such a thought provoking personal and touching lecture.  She has recalled her experiences as a researcher,  Teacher and Administrator at Mumbai University, Tata Institute of Social Sceinces, SNDT and Tata Endowment.  A life worth lived indeed.  At the outset the lecture looks a narrative but deep down it is indeed an eye opener for younger sociologists and professionals.  She is so frank, fair, energetic and simple in what she said.  Hope I will make it  to meet her once at Mumbai where she lives now.  It is quite unfortunate that I happen to be at Bhubaneswar and could not make it to participate in the Indian Sociological Society Conference at Cuttack.  I could have had the privilege to hear her lecture live.  Hats off madam, be happy, keep lecturing for many more years. Jai Sociology.

Tottering with Your Health

In order to develop a healthy lifestyle you must examine your relationship towards bad habits.

Then you must have the will and determination to make changes.
The key elements to instilling a healthy lifestyle are:

* avoiding smoking of any kind,
* curbing or cutting out alcohol consumption,
* following a daily exercise program,
* making healthy food choices, and
* practicing good sleeping habits.

Smoking is the most detrimental vice a person can have, because it has been proven to be one of America's leading causes of death. The U.S. Surgeon General, has determined that cigarette smoking is the number one risk factor for heart disease and cancer.

There are certain measures which have been helpful in the aid to quit smoking. They are:

* nicotine chewing gum,
* nicotine skin patches,
* hypnosis,
* acupuncture,and
* relaxation methods such as yoga and meditation.

To date over fifty million Americans have quit. Set a specific day to quit and add yourself to this number.

A diet rich in antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, protein, nutrients and plenty of water is what all of us should be eating. Unfortunately due to the enormous chains of fast food restaurants, clinical studies have determined that one in three adults in the United States is considered obese. Even more shocking is the fact that one out of every five children in the United States is overweight! According to a recent study published in the journal "Obesity": "86% of American adults will be overweight by the year 2030."

Imagine that, you can use the exact same guide attorneys are using to help others get K1 Visas—for thousands of dollars less than using one.

I was not born here but I am a Naturalized American Citizen. As many Naturalized Citizens often do, I intended to marry a girl from back home. When I wanted to get the K1 Visa for my Fiance and myself I tried it the hard way. I asked people in my neighborhood. I looked online, I tried to get information from non immigration-law attorneys. Then I seeked council with an immigration law attorney; then another one for a second opinion.

The Whole process was a Nightmare for me. I wish I had been better prepared for the situation, but unfortunately I was NOT. I eventually did not marry my fiancee. Not because of the K1 process but for other reasons completely :-( I can say however that this process brought further stress to our relationship… I want to save you that stress, trust me, I know it's not your fault that there is so little information out there.

Anyway, after all the knowledge I acquired regarding the K1 Visa; I thought to myself that people should be better informed about this K1 Visa Process. I've done my research over the years and am now able to guide you through better decisions in getting the right kit for your fiance visa.

If you hold good self-esteem, you like yourself. Others automatically perceive you as likable. You approve of yourself and are in balance overall. Saying 'No' is not a problem when you don't agree with an idea. You are sure of yourself and others around you.

Catching Trout Every Time You Go Fishing

f you are sick and tired of coming home from fishing trips empty handed, having to eat fast food instead of delicious steamed trout, then this will be the most important message you read today.

Let me tell you why:

There is more to fishing than you might have first thought. To be more precise, there's more to the fish themselves and how they think, than you would have ever even considered.

Understanding How Fish Think Is
The Key To Successful Fishing!

Admittedly this message is quite long, but by the end of it you'll have discovered more secrets to fishing for trout than you can poke a rod at. It will be worthwhile for you I promise.

But I should introduce myself first. My name is Nick Anikijenko, and I have been an angler now for 23 years. At the tender age of 10 I made my first cast and I've been in love with the sport ever since.

I've done it all from bay fishing to stream fishing, but it was 11 years ago that I was introduced to spinner fishing for Trout. I was hooked! -- I literally have not fished any other way since.

When I go out, I catch a fish on every single trip. In fact, I'm much closer to cracking-the-code on catching a trout with…

knock 10 strokes off your game in two weeks

If you're anything like me you have endured the highs and lows of golf.  You've had moments of elation coupled with moments of frustration so strong that you literally feel like crying.

     A few years ago that's exactly what I was like.  I had reached a stage with my golf that I couldn't break 100 and one horrific round showed a score of 110.  At that stage I made a pact with myself - I either give it up all together or go all out to shoot par...

... in just 365 days...

     The story of how I broke par in one year has been well documented throughout the world.  It has become an internet golfing forum phenomenon as well as being featured in nearly every major golfing magazine and the golf sections of the newspapers.  Todays Golfer - the largest circulation golf magazine in the UK - thought the story so incredible that they featured it twice and over a total of six full pages.

My book "Dream On" (inspired by the words of Sam Torrance who spoke to my playing partner about my challenge) has been the number one best selling golf book in the UK for months.  It will be released in the US (and hopefully South Africa) in Spring and we are currently in negotiation with a major fiulm company about the film rights.

    But "Dream On" is simply the story of the highs and lows of the year...

     My intention was to chronicle the challenge in a hopefully entertaining fashion that can be enjoyed by golfers and non golfers alike.  It is not a detailed break down of the techniques that I used to take these 33 strokes off...
