What say I have on Success, Digital Divide and Proposed ban on Josheph Lelyveld's book on Mahatma Gandhi …. I respond : April 6, 2011 1. I fully agree with Sukhabodhananda when he says …."irrespective of the best effort one puts in, you have to face both success and failure at different times." Yes success and failures are part and parcel of our lives. We need to accept failures honestly …. to realize the importance of succeeding. One who has not failed … it is said has never passed. 2. A new lesson for Librarians on Digital Divide : Digital divide has new avtar now with Russia's next president's advice on keeping abreast on people's aspirations and feelings. A whopping $220 will have to be shelled out for a project that intends to compile all the information that is elicited by common man in Russia by way of blogs and social networking sits. It is indeed a path breaking direction. Every one … every country in this regard will fall in line one day or the other … sooner or later. What do librarians learn out of this? 3. Joseph Lelyveld's book on Mahatma has created one more furore. When do we become little tolerant of honest and artistic expressions of creative people? # 2. KALA Monthly Lectures Series - Talk on "Intellectual Property Rights", Babu Rajendra, Rajendra.Babu@capco.com
Dear LIS Professionals,
Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) is happy to invite you to the Monthly Lecture Series.
The third talk of the series has been scheduled on Tuesday, 5th April 2011 @6.00pm at the following Address:
Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS)
# 702, 'Upstairs', 42nd Cross, III Block
Rajajinagar, Bangalore - 560 010
Title: Intellectual Property Rights (Patent, Copyright).
Speaker: Bindu Sharma, Founding partner and CEO, Origiin IP Solutions LLP, Bangalore, India.
Abstract:
The term "Intellectual Property" basically means "creation of mind" such as machine, process, design etc with creative or useful output. IP, due to its intangible nature, gets protection under law as patent, copyright, trademark; industrial design etc provided it fulfils basic requirements for protection as prescribed by the legislation. On one hand, IP if protected and exploited sensibly is a valuable asset and can fetch great revenues but on the other hand infringement of third party's IP with or without knowledge can be disastrous. Therefore, need of the hour is to get oneself aware on various aspects of IPR so that it can be used as a tool to generate revenues.
About The Speaker:
Bindu Sharma has eight years of research experience working in reputed institutes of the country such as National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and Jubilant Biosys (P) Ltd., Bangalore. She founded Origiin IP Solutions in the year 2006 and has been handling work such as various patent searches, Patent drafting, filing and prosecution at IPO and PCT, office actions including opposition and revocation petitions, drafting agreements relating transfer of technology, registration of copyright, trademark, conducting IP Audit, framing IP Policies and processes etc for knowledge based companies and academics.
She has been speaker in several conferences, symposiums and has conducted various awareness workshops on IPR for academics as well as corporates. She is visiting faculty in many reputed colleges in India.
She is a Registered Patent Agent at Indian Patent Office, Enrolled as Advocate in Karnataka State Bar Council .
Please confirm your participation.
Thanks and Regards,
Rajendra Babu H

# 4. FYI | The Long-Term Benefits of the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Model, Pralhad Jadhav, pralhadsha@yahoo.com
The Long-Term Benefits of the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Model
John W. Houghton, Centre for Strategic Economic Studies, Victoria University, Australia, recently published The costs and potential benefits of alternative scholarly publishing models.
Link for the Article | http://informationr.net/ir/16-1/paper469.html
From the Abstract |
Analysis. We examine the costs and potential benefits of the major alternative models for scholarly publishing, including subscription publishing, open access publishing and self-archiving. Adopting a formal approach to modelling the scholarly communication process and identifying activity costs, this paper presents activity and system-wide costs for each of the alternative publishing models. It then explores the potential impacts of enhanced access on returns to R&D.
Results. We find that different scholarly publishing models could make a material difference to the costs faced by various parties and to the returns on investment in R&D that might be realised.
Conclusion. It seems likely that more open access could have substantial benefits in the longer term. While the benefits may be lower during a transitional period they would be likely to be positive for both open access publishing and self-archiving alternatives.

Serials Solutions to Enable Full-Text Search of the HathiTrust Collection
Serials Solutions, a Seattle-based company that helps libraries manage services and resources through technology, announced today that it has partnered with HathiTrust to enable full-text searching of HathiTrust's digitized works.
"We look at this agreement as the next level (in the library search experience)," said Michael Gersch, senior VP and general manager of Serials Solutions in an interview with TechFlash. "All the books available in the library just come to life now because you can search on the full text."
HathiTrust was founded in 2008 by a community of research libraries looking to preserve the cultural record by curating and digitizing library collections. The agreement will open HathiTrust's collection – currently 8.4 million volumes – to patrons at libraries using Serials Solutions' Summon, a web-scale search service.
"It's further transforming the search experience by taking the search from the physical space and into the digital space," said Gersch. He used the example of a patron looking for a particular quote – say, "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet," – but who couldn't remember the author (Shakespeare). In the past, the patron would be limited by a traditional library search – author, title, keyword – but by accessing HathiTrust through Summon, they can search on the full text, he said.
Gersch sees the true value of the agreement as deepening the search experience for researchers in an academic setting. "The full text is what a lot of people want to search when doing deep research," he said. "(Accessing HathiTrust) will really accelerate the process and allow people to do research and deep analysis in a much more efficient way."
Currently, Serials Solutions works primarily with libraries in the global academic world, though local clients include the UW, Seattle Pacific University, WSU and the Seattle library system. Those using Summon will be able to access HathiTrust's collection by summer 2011.
Serials Solutions was created in 2000, "born from a librarian who saw the need to have solutions to help librarians deal with technology," said Gersch. The company, which was acquired by ProQuest in 2004, created a suite of products to help libraries manage information and holdings.
18 months ago, the company launched Summon, a Saas search engine that offers a browsing experience similar to what users have become accustomed to with Bing and Google, said Gersch.
"It started making the library relevant again," he said. Libraries can choose the information patrons can access, including that from the open web.
Gersch said he couldn't disclose the financial impact of the deal, but said that over 200 customers use the Summon service.
For more, check out Bethany Overland's Q&A with Michael Gersch in the upcoming April 8th edition of the Puget Sound Business Journal.

Hello Rajshekhar!
Kate here, and we've created an interesting infographic that I think you
might enjoy. There's not a business professional that doesn't know about
LinkedIn, but just exactly how big is it? Would you believe that the number
of members makes it 5 times the population of NYC? Yea, it amazed me too
when I found that out. You can check it out here:

Anyways, just thought this might be of interest to you. If you'd like
other infographics such as these, or if you also have an infographic you
think I'd might like, let me know!
Thanks,
Kate
