Here's is the brief report on the Dr. T.B. Rajashekar Memorial Lecture
(2009) held on Friday, 12 June 2009 at NCSI, IISc.

Topic: "Academic Access in a Globalized World: Scholars without Borders"

Speaker: Dr. Ram Ramaswamy, Professor, School of Physical Sciences,
Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

The event was set in motion with Mr. Francis Jayakanth of NCSI
welcoming the well-attended gathering. He gave a brief life sketch of
late Dr. TBR emphasizing on TBR's contributions and initiatives while
he served at NCSI.

Later, Francis Introduced Dr. IRN Goudar. Dr. Goudar, presided over
the talk. Dr. Goudar being the alma mater of TBR at the DRTC, narrated
couple of incidences that happened during their DRTC course and also
after they started their careers. These incidences only exemplified
the fact that TBR was very clear as to what he intended to do and went
about in completing it with dedication. Later, Dr. Goudar introduced
Dr. Ram and requested him to deliver the lecture.

Dr. Ram began his talk by giving some insights into the higher
education in the country, which is the largest in the world. GoI is
playing a major role in the higher education system in terms of
framing of major policies for the system. He briefly mentioned about
poor library system in most of the colleges and Universities, which is
hindering access to the library holdings. For accessing the online
journals, though INFLIBNET administered UGC Infonet is in place, poor
Internet connectivity beyond the metros is an hindrance in accessing
the online journals.

He also emphasized on Books and book publishing in the country
especially in the social sciences, where scholars publish their
findings in books rather than journal articles. The speaker also
presented some interesting facts about Books and Book publishing in
India. Annually, India publishes between 70,000 to 80,000 titles,
comes from between 16,000 to 17,000 publishers, ranging from those who
do as many as 300-400 titles a year to one person operations-who may
produce only two or three titles/year. According to Federation of
Publishers, Booksellers Associations in India, the Federation of
Indian Publishers, as well as a study of the Indian book market
conducted by the British Publishers Association (2007) puts the value
of the Indian book market at Rs.10,000 crores. In this 10,0000 crores,
approximately Rs.3500 crores comprises educational books and Higher
education Books market is at Rs.2500 crores.

He also gave some insights into publishing business in the western
world by citing Thomson Reuters as an example.

The speaker expressed his concern in the poor distribution network in
the country for quality textbooks and lack of University Press culture
in the country are contributing to the growth of low quality academic
publishing.

He then touched upon the growth of e-books with big players in field
like Thompson, spending great deal of their budget on e-books. He
cited the example of JSTOR. JSTOR was founded in 1995 to build trusted
digital archives for scholarship. Working with the scholarly community
to preserve their work and the materials they rely upon, and to build
a common research platform that promotes the discovery and use of
these resources.

In the context of our country, there was a mention of Language/
Literacy barriers such as * Computing in regional languages remains a
somewhat distant goal. * Low investment in local technological
solutions. * Need for more video content if primary educational goals
are to be addressed.

There was a special mention of ALUKA, an international, collaborative
initiative building an online digital library of scholarly resources
from and about Africa. Now a part of JSTOR. The speaker said, similar
initiatives in the country are need of the hour to showcase India's
academic publishing.

Then Ram presented the demographies of India

* Total India population: 1.037 billion
* Rural population: 72%
* Literacy: 52%
* Computer ownership per 100 inhabitants: 0.6
* Telephone lines per 100: 4.2
* Internet hosts per 10,000: 0.35
* Internet cafés/telecentres per 10,000: 0.1
* Internet users per 100 0.33 subscribers: 1.65 users
* Cell phone subscribers 10.81 million
* Number of websites in the national language(s): 20,000
* Number of websites in English and other language(s): 130,000
* National bandwidth to and from the country: 1,670.3 Mbps

Thus he proposed to have something like SwB:
www.scholarswithoutborders.in (Academic Books from India delivered
Everywhere).

Few facts about SwB are:

* Scholars without Borders (SwB) are an online bookstore for academic
books from India.
* Also other material such as journals, periodicals, reports,
documentaries, CDs.
* Facilitates online ordering and purchase.
* Offers a range of payments: money orders, VPP, cheques, cash, credit
card, etc.
* Over 6000 titles from about 100 publishers.

The motivation for such a SwB by Ram is "To make access to quality
academic books simple, regardless of location."

SwB runs a blog on books from India. It has a presence on Twitter,
Facebook and other networking sites.

Ram also presented the visitors to SwB from various parts of both
India and worldwide. SwB's documentary
site(scholarswithoutborders.in/video). This site is developed in
collaboration with TCS. It provides, Semantic search of video content
and partially view documentaries. Presently this site is undergoing
Beta Testing.

Access equity is the major item in Ram's presentation. An initiative
to promote the distribution of books/academic material through the
Internet and mobile phone. This will largely be a vehicle for the
physical product initially, but they are aiming to increase digital
content, especially of textbooks. The distribution of books and other
published matter across India, especially to places with poor access
to books and bookstores will be a major activity of this Initiative.

While talking about future plans and the path ahead: Ram mentioned
about the book readers such as Amazon Kindle and Olai. He also spoken
about Cell phone based services.

After the question and answer session, Dr. Goudar nicely summed up Dr.
Rams talk. Mr. T.B. Anand proposed vote of thanks.

20090528 - Friday - Take life as it comes to you consciously......

20090528 - Thursday - Life is full of surprises dear

Life is full of surprises dear. We try our level best to anticipate about what could happen the next moment the next day.....but a different thing an altogether different thing could happen....could get visulised. Funny and surprising know? When everything goes on smoothly......suddenly something which we never expected will come up before us. When everything is in disorder and shambles...orderlyness becomes visible. What I realise slowly and steadily is .... we should continue swimming. ...... dont feel the fear of distance of the shore ... and fear of the tides that may confront. We need to swim across ... with a good faith that ... we will reach the shore next moment or the next hour or the next day. Hope you will agree to this.
I just wonder ... how interesting and how uncertain and how unpredictible is life......
What ever is happening ... and whatever is going to happen........isn't it ok dear? Be smiling and take life as it comes consciously.

Book reviews are a special form of academic writing. They have well-known structures with familiar components. Here, James Hartley of the School of Psychology, Keele University, UK, consults with academics on writing the perfect book review and presents a potential checklist for book reviewers.

How to... promote your work
A good promotions strategy will increase the impact of your work by getting more people to read your article, improving your citation ratings, and ensuring that your work becomes more widely known both within your academic and practitioner community and outside it. It will also help disseminate the practical and policy-related implications of your work to those who can implement it. This guide concentrates on strategies that will help you and your colleagues make your articles, as well as the wider research on which they are based, better known. If you are working as part of a research centre or larger research programme with major funding, then you will need to talk to your partners and your funding body about developing a proper communications strategy.

How to... collaborate on writing an article
Many Emerald articles result from collaboration. Reasons for this include the: increasing importance of publication for tenure, promotion and satisfying the UK Research Assessment Exercise; tendency towards large, multidisiplinary projects; nature of research funding; pressure for PhD students to get out publications even before their PhD is approved; and greater ease afforded by electronic means of communication. How to... prepare papers if English is not your first language
Preparing and writing an academic article for publication in an English language journal is a daunting experience for anyone, but particularly so if your first language is not English. This guide gives you some support with preparing articles in a non-native tongue. It is not possible to give specific advice about English, because teaching English as a foreign langauge is a highly specialized area requiring a great deal of skill. However, we will provide general advice on writing articles and list some useful resources including editing services.

How to... survive peer review and revise your paper
What gives being published in a journal especial credibility is that other experts have read the work and deemed it acceptable. The peer review process is therefore what gives the journal in which you have chosen to place your article, and your paper if you have done the necessary revisions, a quality control stamp. This guide offers advice on minimizing the chances of having to revise your work by getting it right in the first place, to a practical example of carrying out your own peer review.

How to... proofread your work
As far as writing an article for publication is concerned, we are talking about authors proofreading before it goes to production. In many ways, it is more like copy-editing, which is about close attention to the detail of the script, reading at sentence level to make sure there is nothing that can detract from accuracy and clarity, be it errors of grammar, inconsistency, spelling, or punctuation. "If a paper is not carefully checked, then it looks not just sloppy, but as though the author does not care. So why should anyone else?" (John Peters, Emerald CEO and editor of Management Decision).

How to... write more simply
Reviewers of academic papers often point out that the language is unnecessarily obscure and obtuse. The reviewer or editor feels there is a good point in there somewhere, but it is not easy for the reader to find. In contrast, good English is economical and spares redundant words. In Lost for Words: The Use and Abuse of the English Language, John Humphrys describes the qualities of good English: "... clear, simple, plain and unambiguous ... free of jargon, although there will be exceptions. It should be easy to read and listen to rather than a chore. At the very least it should not make our tongues fur up". This guide provides suggestions on how you can make sure your style is as clear as possible.

How to... structure your article
According to one survey on why articles fail to get published in economics journals, there are two main reasons. Either the paper does not make, or does not demonstrate that it makes, a contribution to knowledge or the paper is badly organized, with the parts not fitting together to form a coherent whole. These two factors, which rated more highly in this survey than targetting the wrong journal, both relate to the paper's structure. Papers that are well structured will have a logical organization with a beginning, a middle and an end, and above all a sense of purpose which communicates itself to the reader, will motivate him or her to continue reading in the belief that the author is making a contribution to knowledge.

How to... use the Harvard reference system
The Harvard reference system, also known as the author-date system, is Emerald's approved system of citing other works. Articles submitted to Emerald are required to use this system. This guide explains how and where to use references within the text of your article and how to compile the reference list at the end. We also look at some of the software tools that are available to simplify these tasks.

How to... write an abstract
An abstract is a succinct summary of a longer piece of work, usually academic in nature, which is published in isolation from the main text and should therefore stand on its own and be understandable without reference to the longer piece. It should report the latter's essential facts, and should not exaggerate or contain material that is not there. Its purpose is to act as a reference tool (for example in a library abstracting service) and, more importantly, to enable the reader to decide whether or not to read the full text. It is your opportunity to gain readership and citation.

How to... write for a practitioner audience
If you are an academic, then you have good job-related reasons to want to publish: your job and your promotion depends upon your keeping up your publishing profile in quality scholarly journals. If you are a practising manager, however, writing for publication is not part of your job and can seem much less important than keeping up with your targets and the inevitable fire-fighting. This guide aims to explain the benefits of publishing to practising managers and to give advice on how to publish successfully.

How to... find the right journal
Finding the right journal is as important to the publishing process as is having something original to say and saying it well. Many journal editors claim that a good proportion of their rejections happen not because manuscripts are of insufficient quality, but because they are inappropriate for the journal's objectives. As ever, it is easier (and usually leads to a more successful oputcome) if you address these issues as early as possible.

How to... write a literature review
A literature review is a description of the literature relevant to a particular field or topic. It gives an overview of what has been said, who the key writers are, what are the prevailing theories and hypotheses, what questions are being asked, and what methods and methodologies are appropriate and useful. As such, it is not in itself primary research, but rather it reports on other findings.

How to... write a case study
A case study involves focusing on a set of issues in some contemporary setting, usually but not exclusively an organization, or perhaps a department or sector of an organization. It may use just one case or a number of cases linked together by a theme. Because of its real-world setting, it is a powerful tool of analysis, and one that obviously chimes in with Emerald's concern to disseminate implications for practice. It is particularly good at addressing "how" and "why" questions
