February 3rd 2009   A reflection of a Librarian on "A matter of trust/Arun Maira.-Times of India – February 2, 2009, page 16(centre page).   This educative centre page article by Management consultant Arun is educative and sensitizing.  It is specially useful to commoners and non-finance-non economists to grasp a minimum of understanding about concepts like : recession, global meltdown, global slowdown, global meltdown etc. The much valued freedom that the business need, the extent of accountability and responsibility that is required of them towards government and society are well brought out in the paper.   A reasonable and significant ethical level of conduct on the part of businessmen; transparency and required flexibility of rules and guidelines on the part of Government and a trust and belief of people towards both Government and Business work towards building  sound global economies.  As brought very well by Arun business which always wanted less and less interference by government, now wants their unquestioned and unlimited support both in terms of finance and moral backing.  It is true, these troubled times need fundamental changes in the ways governments function, in the way businesses function and in the way people empower and trust governments and business.  Are we all to move forward towards a disciplined flexibility and a reasonable balancer between freedom and equity.   What do we think about this as librarians? Directly or indirectly, to a more or less extent we too are business, a different servicing business.  Apart from asking more and more in terms of salaries and perks and of course budgets; we need to learn the economics of financing of the libraries, our duties and accountability towards all stake holders , I mean the institution we serve and the government and people at large.   As librarians let us learn more and more lessons of being sensitive, responsible and accountability and lateral thinking, at these troubled and hopeless times.  Shall we pledge to be out of the box, shall we restart ourselves to prove our social relevance and indispensability.  We have come of age.  Let us re-affirm ourselves, and continue our age old affinity with knowledge and its power.   Rajashekhar Devarai Librarian lotus5673@yahoo.co.in blog : http://indialibrarian-intl.blogspot.com   Librarianship is a noble profession. lotus5673@yahoo.co.in 1816gbgv

20090202-Amsterdam revisited - Courtsey-Sonia of St.Xavior's college Mumbai   Pictorial write up of Sonia (Hindustan times-HT Cafe 31-01-2009) of St.Xavior's College indeed took me  to the year 1998, when I was there. I was a member of a 6 member librarians team of NIFT who set out abroad for a conference (IFLA conference Amsterdam) and Fashion Fairs at London.   The trip inclusivie of travel time was about 15 days which also included a short visit to Rotterdam.  Amsterdam the city of museums , a city which sheltered protestants - a historical event, a city more known as an utopian city, indeed was my home for few days.  Cleanliness , smart and fast people, fast moving cars, old but grand and artistic buildings mark the city apart.  Red light areas of any city in the world scare even the so called daring urbanites., the city so beautifully different even in its redlight area.  People familites, children move freely around without any fear.... even late nights.  Dam square was liked by all of us for its beautiful setting, people around.  The picture of the city never fades from my memory even after 10 long years.  Thank you Sonia for reminding me of the beauty of this beautiful city.  It is quite interesting to know from  her that one can stay at Amsterdam now for a night @Rs.4416.00 - breakfast included : http://www.sevenbridgeshotel.in   Inspiration for this write up : Amsterdam awakening?Sonia.-HT cafe 31-01-2009 page 7 and 8.     Rajashekhar Devarai lotus5673@yahoo.co.in   Librarianship is a noble profession. lotus5673@yahoo.co.in 1816gbgv

Kaula, Chief guest of the function highlighted the importance of KM in present society. The  concept of KM is fast developing and the time is here to implement the application of KM in Libraries and Information Centers .   Prof. Jean-Louis Ermine, Associate Dean, TELECOM School of Management , Paris France delivered keynote address.   Prof.  Ermine was the main resource person. Dr. Parag Sanghani, Director, AESMPGIBM, Ahmedabad, Dr. Debahsis Patnaik, IIT Kanpur and Dr. Zafar Numani, Dept. law, AMU delivered lectures on different aspects of KM.   About ninety delegates from libraries, management, IT, medicine, corporate, NGO and research organizations from India and abroad participated in the two day workshop.   Prof. Ermine gave hands on training in KMM and CKF models of KM technology. Study materials were distributed along with few exercises and presentations on CD-ROM for further developing their KM expertise. A cultural evening was also organized on 24th Jan. . The Librarian (with a capital L)
Is a saint who knows
She can't lock herself in a tower
She lives in the Library, her back to the door
And answers questions from patrons who call
In quiet, confused voices
Or with loud, angry demands
Or as an afterthought, mistakenly convinced she can offer nothing they don't already know
The Librarian turns no one away

The Librarian
Is closely related to
The Sorceress and the Poet
But her painful modesty and disturbing sense of propriety
Have prevented her from recognizing the kinship
And accepting her family's riches

The Librarian has, instead
Collected vast riches of her own
She knows the books are very important
Though she isn't sure…
Maybe some of them are more important
Than others
She has to read them
To see

and she's entranced and she forgets the others the pain and the beauty
The knowledge

Lecture by Eric Chivian 26th Jan 2009   The best part of my visit to Techfesta was attending a live video lecture (video conference)...live by ERIC Chivian (recipient of Noble peace price in the year 1985) on Sustaining life. The Earth's biodiversity - the rich variety of life on our planet - is disappearing at an alarming rate.  And while human health depends, to a larger extent than we might imagine, on biodiversity, the essential relationship is rarely addressed.  JDr. Erick Chivian lectured on the importance of biodiversity to human health - from medicines, biomedical research, infectios diseases, and food production to the ecosystem services that support life on earth, and learn why we can no longer see ourselves as separate from the natural world. , nor assume that we will be unharmed by its alteration.   Eric Chivian is the recipient of the 1985 Nobel peace prize.  He is the Founder and Director of the Centre of Health and the Global Environment, and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.     RajLibrarian   Librarianship is a noble profession. lotus5673@yahoo.co.in 1816gbgv

Its great to see how the work is spreading wings.. Arbinger in India is represented by Managing Director, Mr. Nagendra Iyer from Bangalore. He can be contacted at +91 9844 066 657 By the way - I went deep into the box reading this review... being associated with Arbinger work for about a year... I already seem to have developed an 'attachment' to the work !!! :)... Especially - I have not seen the same treatment / definition of Self-Betrayal as done by Arbinger ever before.. In the context of Arbinger's work -- Self-Betrayal -- has a specific meaning - not-necessarily the dictionary meaning. So - when I see in your review - mention of synonyms or definitions of Self-betrayal - I don't know if they do enough justice to the understanding of the term as expressed by the work of Prof. Terry Warner.. I would caution against the use of other dictionary meanings for this term as it may confuse or make the audience pre-judge the work. Don't know if I make sense from all the above... It's fascinating to me to consider how others have experienced a work that I, too, have experienced. I appreciated being able to read your review and "see" through your eyes. I think I agree with Venu about the referenced definitions you've noted. They are all very interesting, and each at least tangentially related to the Arbinger material, in this way: my understanding is that in the field of philosophy-psychology, there were unanswered or unaddressed inconsistencies or anomalies in the approach various great minds took toward the problem of self-deception, and the manner(s) in which human beings respond to stimuli of various kinds. Dr. Warner and his colleagues have worked to clarify the misconceptions surrounding self-deception, and the result is Arbinger's very unique work. Personally, I find the concepts relevant on so many levels in my day to day living and interactions that I see them as universal. Your point #4 describes very well how I feel when I acknowledge my boxes...and more importantly, acknowledge the reality of the people I meet, work, live and in all ways exist alongside. Thank you again for posting this. It is helping me re-examine the definitions I hold for the key concepts of Arbinger philosophy. All the best you you and your co-author on the piece. We were deeply moved by the concept and its relevance in our lives. Though the review was prepared that time only, it could not be communicated for publishing .... as the draft got misplaced. I recently got the copy and thought it better to put it on this blog. I need to know more and more about the contribution of Arbinger.
