Successful conduct of "Knowledge for all" - International Conference - Congratulations Dr.Muttayya Koganuramath
I take this opportunity to Congratulate to Dr. Mutthayya.
Koganurmath and his team for successfully organizing the
International Conference on “Knowledge for All: Role of
Library & Information Centers”,
to commemorate ILA Platinum Jubilee Year 2008. I could be,
able to witness the deliberations and able to interact with
my other colleagues who had come from various places of India
and from abroad. All the delegates were really impressed by the
event and were praising Dr. Koganuramath and his team for
extending good hospitality. Indeed it is true that the event
was breathtaking one. Success can be achieved through the
efforts of the good team and the good leader leading the
same. Dr. Koganuramath takes such a keen interest in every
event to make it a grand success, howsoever small or big it
may be. The meticulously and judiciously prepared schedule
of the Conference itself is an evidence.
The LIS luminaries across India gathered and deliberated on
various range of LIS issues. This conference gave me an
opportunity to interact, share and exchange my views with
the great personlities of LIS profession. I am sure all the
participants also must have borrowed a lot from the conference
as they got an opportunity to witness the meaningful and thought
provoking deliberations of all FOUR (hectic) days as there were
about more than 100 papers presented in the conference.
This mega Conference was unique in many ways in real sense. All
the presentations were made by using PPT which was possible only
because of the state-of-the- art technology made available in
the conference hall. And Mumbai, being the commercial hub of
India , gave that cosmopolitan touch and flavor which an
International event requires.
I once again congratulate Dr. Koganuramth and I also congratulate
all the awardees of the Conference.
With Best Wishes,
Dr. Vidya Veeresh. Hanchinal.

Mumbai attacked by terrorists - Taj - Trident - Nariman House
"Terror Attacks on Mumbai" - Being Librarians do we have Any thing to say ? So many lost their lives, many got injured and struggling for lifeNow, many are in the trauma of having lost their dear ones ...Home Minister Shivaraj had to resign, distinguished and dedicated police officers and others died in the process. The incident and event shook India, shook Mumbai, and attracted world attention. About Mumbai these four five days, : Hope you had watched carefully on TV what happened to Mumbai. What is our role as a Librarian. Had a Librarian been at the site of disturbance .... what would have been his contribution? Can we think of a situation ... where in a high profile .. highly trianed in disaster information is posted on the site nearer to the spot of disturbance. What could be his role in such a situation. Dont you think ... a could contribute a lot in mitigating and minimising the losses by offering right information ... at the neck of the moment? There is something known as Emergency Librarianship which deals with the systems and services concerned with emergency situations .... may be medical urgencies ... may be urgencies in terms of natural calamities.... think about it write back to me. Incidentally there is a journal titled, "Emergency Librarian" .... unfortunately I could not get the website of the same as the web version does not exist. But the journal verymuch exists. The indication is that Librarians' work apart from being steady, slow and systematic, also have to deal with emergecy calls ... and on toes service. We should respond to all kinds of situations that the society expects of us. Then only we can boost of our image as terminal to the very existence of society.... this kind of services create our indispensibilities ... which is a must for evolving a glorious and professional standing. Sugunasri Maddala's Column - "Many eyes"
At an experimental Web site, Many Eyes, (http://www.many-eyes.com/), users can upload the data they want to visualize, then try sophisticated tools to generate interactive displays. These might range from maps of relationships in the New Testament to a display of the comparative frequency of words used in speeches by Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.
The site was created by scientists at the Watson Research Center of I.B.M. in Cambridge, Mass., to help people publish and discuss graphics in a group. Those who register at the site can comment on one another’s work, perhaps visualizing the same information with different tools and discovering unexpected patterns in the data.
Ben Shneiderman, a professor in the computer science department at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a pioneer in information visualization, says sites like Many Eyes are helping to democratize the tools of visualization. “The gift of the Internet is that everyone can participate, and the tools can be brought to a much wider audience,” he said.
Presenting results in a static spreadsheet or table may do the job. “But sometimes it’s like driving with your eyes closed,” he said. “With visualization, it might be possible to open your eyes and see something that will help you” — for instance, patterns, clusters, gaps or outliers in the data.
“The great fun of information visualization,” he said, “is that it gives you answers to questions you didn’t know you had.”
