Sugunasri Maddala's Column - "Many eyes"

PEOPLE share their videos on YouTube and their photos at Flickr. Now they can share more technical types of displays: graphs, charts and other visuals they create to help them analyze data buried in spreadsheets, tables or text.

At an experimental Web site, Many Eyes, (http://www.many-eyes.com/), users can upload the data they want to visualize, then try sophisticated tools to generate interactive displays. These might range from maps of relationships in the New Testament to a display of the comparative frequency of words used in speeches by Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

The site was created by scientists at the Watson Research Center of I.B.M. in Cambridge, Mass., to help people publish and discuss graphics in a group. Those who register at the site can comment on one another’s work, perhaps visualizing the same information with different tools and discovering unexpected patterns in the data.

Ben Shneiderman, a professor in the computer science department at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a pioneer in information visualization, says sites like Many Eyes are helping to democratize the tools of visualization. “The gift of the Internet is that everyone can participate, and the tools can be brought to a much wider audience,” he said.

Presenting results in a static spreadsheet or table may do the job. “But sometimes it’s like driving with your eyes closed,” he said. “With visualization, it might be possible to open your eyes and see something that will help you” — for instance, patterns, clusters, gaps or outliers in the data.

“The great fun of information visualization,” he said, “is that it gives you answers to questions you didn’t know you had.”

Data can be organized many ways on Many Eyes. Above is a chart of Olympic medals.

Published: August 30, 2008

I read about this earlier, perhaps in newspaper. But, before trying it for myself, or forget about it before doing anything with it, I thought of sharing it with our community. Some of us may try it. Visualization may help to make our point more clear and may help many a librarian convince their directors and users.

Meet Sandhya, the Silent, Sincere and Senior Serials Librarian

It is my privilege and my responsibility to introduce Ms. Sandhya Gir, Senior Library Officer, ICRISAT (Patancheru 502324 Andhra PradeshIndia email : s.gir@cgiar.org ) to our LIS community. She has put in over 30 years of steady service in ICRISAT and has been the pillar post for Library services in ICRISAT, when all others including me left the Library in search of greener and/or easier jobs.

We always see her like this and even this photograph is taken by our colleague Mr. David without her knowledge.

She has a very rich experience in handling serials management. She can be contacted for getting a practical insight into the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of Serials management.

I am going to introduce to our ILI community, Ms.Sandhya, the silent, shy and senior serials librarian shortly.!!

Dear Mr. Devrai,
Greetings and good wishes!

I am going to introduce to our ILI community, Ms. Sandhya, the silent, shy and senior serials librarian - shortly. Whole of last week we were busy with our co-ordinator from FAO.Pl. have a look at this link.

http://www.arboretum.org.in/

Do you personally know Mr. Prafulla Chandra who is in this project?I contacted him via e-mail and I got a response. Beyond this I don't want to disturb him now. I came to know about this when I mentioned to Srinivasachary, (another friend of mine who works in Manage) that I am interested only in growing a few trees and preach only that to people.Their tag line - ...at peace in the lap of nature ... gave me instant peace.I know that a single tree in our own garden gives more peace than 1000 trees in an arboretum. But we have to work - for money!!! Then is it better to work in an arboretum?I nurture one more `dream lifestyle' in the context of this arboretum. But after I hear more from you about this venture and people concerning it.

Thanks for your encouragement and support. Your ILI blog is encouraging and supporting many people like me.Waiting to hear more from you about this project,

Mrs.Sugunasri Maddala - Independent Information Consultant

FREE RANGE LIBRARIAN!

Free Range Librarian : BLOG http://freerangelibrarian.com/ Free Range Librarian :
http://freerangelibrarian.com/

BLOGFree Range Librarian comprises the public, oft-daily mumblings and grumblings of one Karen G. Schneider, a writer and librarian who has written over 100 articles and 2 books, primarily about Internet technologies for library trade publications. Her less technically-oriented works include essays, portraits, travelogues, video reviews, and a historically dubious account of Washington crossing the Delaware. From 1995 to 2001, as the Internet Librarian columnist for American Libraries (circulation 65,000), Schneider consistently ranked in magazine surveys as AL's most popular author.By day, Schneider is a drudge who meekly toils in the shadow of six brilliant librarians who select, evaluate, describe, and organize websites for the well-regarded Librarians? Know your Librarians Far and Wide - Series : Rebecca Blakiston

KNOW YOUR LIBRARIAN FAR AND WIDE - LIBRARIAN - Rebecca Blakiston

Rebecca Blackiston in her own words,
"As a budding library professional, I thought it was about time I started my own blog. This blog began as I was trekking through my final semester in library school in fall of 2007. There honestly isn’t much of a focus, but rather a general sharing of knowledge with the rest of the library world. I hope this will help facilitate discussion of various outreach and professional development activities, new technologies & other methods of reaching communities, and the future role of libraries and librarianship.
About me, I recently obtained my MLS from the School of Information Resources & Library Science (SIRLS) at the University of Arizona (UA). I began the program in the fall of 2005 and graduated this past December 2007. I was President of the Library Student Organization, our ALA Student Chapter, Spring 2006-Spring 2007, which was a fantastic experience. I also co-chaired the planning for our 3rd Annual Graduate Student Symposium held in November 2007.
I was full-time staff in the Materials Access Team (access services) at the UA Library starting in 2005, and held the title of Library Specialist, Library Information Associate, and Library Information Analyst. Prior to becoming staff I was a student worker (shelving, paging, maps, newspapers, circ desk, scanning, photocopy, you name it) for two years. In January 2008 I landed an Assistant Librarian position with the Undergraduate Services Team so now work primarily with reference services and instruction for first-year students. This is a temporary one-year contracted position so I am still actively seeking a permanent position for when this has run its course.
I have a passion for librarianship and its values, particularly teaching information literacy, promoting equity of access & freedom of information, participating in outreach to communities, and encouraging continuous learning. While my experiences have mostly been in the academic setting, I am very open to working in a variety of libraries, as long as they have the same commitments and support the same values that got me into this profession in the first place. We will see where this field takes me. I can’t say where but I am certainly up for the adventure!"

I dont think anybody canrestrict someone whos might be really interested in doing something. This isour Indian education system, we are not allowed to do something we areinterested in doing something. But forced to do which we do not like at all.Come on people wake up, its high time to restrict something. Do ourprofessionals know something about multitasking? Librarian has to be one, moreover it is his part of professional requirement. Wake up people wake upfrom slumber!!First of all there is hell of misunderstanding about the librarians inIndia, moreover if he is restricted to enhance his knowledge then thisprofession will be drowned. This today's concept of librarian is framedbecause of old professionals who hardly did work towards progress and somainly the professionals are not at all PROACTIVE. Please change yourselfand fit in today's world. ili - SUGANA'S COLUMN - : Dr. S.R.Raganathan's painting presented to the Department of Library Science, Sri Venkateswara University, 1986

Dr.Ranganathan's photograph on Asha's blog reminded me of my contribution to the Dep. Lib. Scie., S.V. University. I painted Dr. Ranganathan's portrait the day before our annual meet and presented it during the function.

Dr. Ranganathan's concepts remain current even to date. Application of his ideas to address the issues of semantic web technologies needs to be explored.

Have u heard of a Newspaper temple...?

Respected Friends,

In the digital age where it has been assumed that Internet is much sought after source of knowledge, and newspaper can be read on your Blackberry, Here is eye opener news appear.
There is a temple in Dhamtari District of Raipur a place where no gods or goddess are worshiped. In this temple NEWSPAPERS has a divine status here and worshipped daily.
The temple built in 1993, and known as Gandhi Mandir and look after by Halba sect of Gond tribe of the Chhatisgarh.
The locals have string reasons for expressing their faith in print media. This clearly shows in words of Gandhi Mandir priest Balram Markam, which are "The Newspapers are eye openers, create awareness, remain watchful of the evils and crimes in society, inculcate human values and prevent people from committing wrong"
The temple is decorated with various slogans and hymns dedicated to the nation, Mahatma Gandhi and the people who are dubbed the 'Janata Gandhi'.

ARCHANA SINGH'S COLUMN ON ili - HYBIRD LIBRARY

HYBIRD LIBRARY
The hybrid library is a term used by librarians to describe libraries containing a mix of traditional print library resources and the growing number of electronic resources. Hybrid libraries are mixes of traditional print material such as books and magazines, as well as electronic based material such as downloadable audio books, electronic journals, e-books, etc. Hybrid libraries are the new norm in most public and academic libraries. It seems that the term "hybrid library" was first coined in 1998 by Chris Rusbridge in an article for D-Lib Magazine [1].Hybrid libraries evolved in the 1990s, when electronic resources became more easily available for libraries to acquire for public use. Initially these electronic resources were typically access to material distributed on media such as CD-ROM or searches of specialised databases. The OCLC helped push libraries towards acquiring digital resources by providing a centralized technology resource for participating libraries [2]. Now, with the widespread availability of digital content, it includes Internet resources and documents which are online, such as eprints.Hybrid libraries are the new norm for many archivists as well. Digitization has changed the way archivists have gone about preserving historical items. Archivists are now using digital technology to preserve items that were once only preserved by things like microfiche. Archivists now use things like digital imaging which make it possible for researchers to see historical items online.[3]The emergence of the hybrid library has put a new emphasis on copyright issues for many libraries. The complicated and changing copyright laws in both the United States and the European Union have made it a challenge for many libraries to make sure their patrons are using the digital items lawfully.[4]Hybrid Libraries need staff that are trained in helping patrons navigate the vast amount of information available in the digital age. Librarians working in hybrid libraries now must have training in electronic media as well as the traditional print forms.
