Palo Alto University names library after renowned Afghan librarian

My Town

Omar Seddiqui has traveled the world, handled precious documents and used to preside over the entire public library system in his homeland of Afghanistan.

Tonight, at a ceremony at the Stanford Faculty Club, Seddiqui's name will be emblazoned on a bronze plaque for all to see.

The "Omar Seddiqui Library" sign will hang next to the library at the new Palo Alto University campus on Arastradero Road, formerly known as the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology.

"All the time, I'm with books," Omar Seddiqui, 85, said Wednesday from his modest San Jose home. "This is very, very important for me."

Having such a distinguished man's name on the library is also an honor for the niche university of about 1,000 behavioral science students, said Palo Alto University President Allen Calvin.

"I have great admiration for the Afghan people and for what Mr. Seddiqui did there for his people," Calvin said. "He brings a long scholarly tradition with him."

Palo Alto is a long way from Herat, Afghanistan, where Omar Seddiqui was born.

He is the son of the late Mohamad Seddiq, a renowned scholar, professor, judge and collector of books. In 1955, Omar Seddiqui had a library in Herat named after his father.

Seddiqui's eight children wanted to do the same for their father in their new home of Silicon Valley.

Fred Seddiqui is the eldest son and a "serial entrepreneur" who sits on the board of trustees at the Palo Alto University.

Over the four years he's been on the board, he donated tens of thousands of dollars to the university, plus a significant number of stock shares from two companies he founded: Sunnyvale-based Avantis Medical Systems and Mountain View-based Axis Surgical Technologies.

Nine months ago, he proposed naming the library after his father.

"My father has gone through much struggle, living in two different worlds," Fred Seddiqui said. "He is a great example to our family. When he first came here, he did flea market work, which could have been demeaning to a man of his stature, but he did it so he could remain independent."

At first blush, Omar Seddiqui appears unassuming, a slightly built man with a neat white beard and clear green eyes. Until he pulls out a stack of aging documents written in Farsi, papers that reflect a lifetime of awards and achievements.

Before the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and kicked him out of his post, Omar Seddiqui served for more than two decades in Afghanistan's Ministry of Information and Culture. For the last 10 years of his career, Seddiqui was director and president of the National Archives and Public Library, where he acquired precious documents, ancient poems and historic documents. In the 1970s, he was invited to Washington to visit the Library of Congress, and he was a frequent speaker all over the world.

Seddiqui has also been a prolific writer. He studied journalism and wrote a 400-page manuscript called "Escape From My Country," which details his flight to the United States with his wife, Halima, in 1982.

Since living in San Jose, Seddiqui has remained active. Not only is he able to visit his eight children and 10 grandchildren, many who live nearby in Palo Alto, Los Altos, Danville and San Jose, but he also tries to attend every Afghan festivity.

"He's a party animal," joked Fred Seddiqui.

Most of his children have become entrepreneurs. None is a librarian.

"All of us like writing, though," Fred Seddiqui. "We all write when we're stressed."

Even in his later years, Omar Seddiqui has penned articles on politics, religion and culture for the Los Angeles-based Afghan Mirror magazine, the Washington-based Omaid newspaper, the Alameda-based Caravan newspaper, and is a guest on the Pleasanton-based Noor TV. He also was president of the Afghan Center on Meridian Avenue in San Jose, where up to 100 Afghan-American youths come to learn Farsi and Pashto.

"My father has instilled so much in us," Fred Seddiqui said. "It's just nice to recognize people when they're alive instead of when they're gone. And a library, that's something we're connected by through the generations."

Condolence Meeting

We deeply mourn the sad demise of Shri. Subrata Dutta, former Hony General
Secretary, IASLIC at the age of 68 on November 21, 2009 at 3:00 a.m. at his
residence in Kolkata due to massive cardiac arrest.

His sudden death has hurt us deeply and we feel proud of him for his
wholehearted dedication towards the profession. He served INSDOC, Kolkata as
Scientist for a long period. After his retirement Mr. Dutta was attached with
CALIBNET as Director for promoting its functioning and services. During his
tenure as Hony General Secretary in 1998 & 1999 he took many positive steps
to popularize the activities of IASLIC.

To pay homage to his departed soul and to commemorate respectfully his
activities a condolence meeting will be held on 21st January, 2010 at 6.30
p.m. in the IASLIC meeting Hall, P-291, CIT Scheme-6-M, Kankurgachi, Kolkata
700 054.

All are requested to be present in the condolence meeting to pay homage to
the departed soul.

A librarian writes to C'ba and Vicky,

My darlings,

This lonely dad this sunday takes to writing not knowing what to do. Dears when I slept lasty night i fixed the alarm at 7.00am but you know that, I got up before the alarm ri9ngs at about 6.00am. A huge and whole sunday infront of me. Listened to morning news, hjad a cup of tea using amulya, cleaned utensils and then rolled back under blanket for a nap again. It5 was 7.00am when i opened my eyes. I thought, yes it was time to wake up. At times it so happens that we are so busy in so many things small and big , important and unimportant.......hours roll down........at the end of the day you that feel that nothing substantial was done and it is already evening and the same thing happened today. Let me tell you what I did : immedfiately after waking up prepared a cup of tea and had it with parle G and read newspaper, had a morning walk, shampooved the hair and had a nice bath after shaving. and this is waht I did since morning. I wanted to finalise my Research Proposal, I wanted to conclude a book review.........nothing of this sort happened. I was so busy.....but in thinking., listening to BBC news., standing in the balcony seeing people go around on the road below.

But let me tell you, it was a wonderful sunday today this day in Bhubaneswarl. You know at times you have to just flow with your thoughts........do things as they happen.....while away your time as per spontaneity of your thoughts.....dont put dead lines ....be yourself......listen to music......sleep.....and in between dream.........build castles in the air........ you know this kind of Sunday and holidaying is real break. This is the best way of brewaking the monotony and routines.......... As real rest to your mind happens this way. When I was reading....."Times of India (Open SPace - page 7.....i found a small write up by Nita Mehta of Jipur, she has nicel;y summed up the meaning and relevance of digital cleansing......a term mooted by John Mayer...... a musician, tweeter and an avid blogger. His new year resolution was to keep off all digital contraptions........wheich meant he would not email, would not get on to his social newtworks. W, would not blog and surf. This is termed as "digital cleanse"....... I dont know how relevant is this term suitable for the meaning that he is assigning to this new found word. John Mayers idea behind mooting this term is be health crazy, take rest.......unplug....come out and meet people. This really a good guide for th those who are addicted to computer like Vicky. Indeed it is worthy to be clinging to system from morning to evening.........we should be realistic, we should meet people, friends......play . Am I right Vicky? Computers and internet connect us to the world.......people all over the world instantly. What about those of us who are yet to be hooked up with hte net and ystems. and be at large with the people of the world in a relative sense. Bye for now and kids.....let me get back to you again on another sunday or holiday with another exercise of idling. Be happy......be smiling........be idle sometimes......it is good for health.......be smart. Say hi to your mummy......

It is great pleasure for me to inform you that Dr. B. S. Kademani , Scientific Officer-F , Scientific Information Resource Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre has been awarded the prestigious 'SIS Fellowship-2009 Award' by the Society for Information Science (SIS) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Library and Information Science field. This award was presented to him by Dr. Craig W. Stephens, Vice President, Chemical Abstracts Service, Ohio, USA on 9^th December 2009 in a glittering ceremony at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune.

Dr.Kademani is the recipient of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Fellowship in 'Library and Scientific Documentation' in 1991 at the Facinformationszentrum (FIZ), Karlsruhe, Germany and Vienna International Centre (VIC), Austria. He is also the recipient of ILA-Kaula Best Librarian Award-2008. He was a Standing Committee Member of IFLA's (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) Science and Technology Libraries Section from India for the term 2005-2009.He has over 80 research papers published in national and International Journals, edited eight books and many compilations. He is also a referee to many national and international professional journals. His book entitled ' scientometric Portrait of Homi Jehangir Bhabha: The Father of Indian Nuclear Research Programme' was released by Dr. Srikumar Banerjee, Director, Bhabha Atomic Research centre, Mumbai on 30^th October,2009 to mark the Homi Bhabha Centenary Year Celebrations. This book has been widely appreciated by the scientific Community.
Dr. S. Sivaram, Director, NCL, Pune, Dr. Craig W. Stephens, Dr. Naresh Kumar,President, SIS, Dr. Wadhwa, Secretary, SIS and Dr. R. R. Hirwani were the dignitaries present on the occasion.
While receiving the award Dr. Kademani remembered his collaborators, colleagues, friends and family members and dedicated this award to them.
It is a matter of great pride for us to work with him.
