At Random From Lbn.Raj and Lbn.Susri

At Random From Lbn.Raj and Lbn.Susri

With the advancement of science & technology & world becoming smaller & smaller due to efficient transport & communication people are living far & wide. Individualistic tendencies are on the increase despite having high connectivities. People of all ranks & files at times feel & be lonely. This loneliness could be in terms of staying away from near & dear ones, it could be that being in society & circles people still come across situations & times when they get secluded & separated. Celebrities many a times face this problem. Inside their heart of hearts they feel isolated, secluded & desperate for care, love & affection.

What about the Librarian?

Is identity crisis close to the phenomena of being aloof & alone & secluded. The average person still is average of the title of “Librarian”, or “Granthapal” or “Pustakalayadyaksha” .Some one says he is a Librarian a common need to be explained on the role & work side of the Librarianship. It looks like, Librarians have endorsed this outlook & opinion of people in general. It is not uncommon for Librarians to fancy with innovative different & fictitious titles. When some one equates us with a teacher we feel happy, when some one equates us with a Manager or a Scientist or Scholar or Fabrician we tend to be happy & relieved. Is it what brings us close to identity crisis? When shall we learn to put our foot down to realize & assert in no uncertain terms on what we are & what we stand for, when shall we learn to stop fancying with misleading job titles? When shall we, come what may, realize that the core things & works that we are engaged in steadily pushing us to the centre phase. Can we not realize our uniqueness & import once before others? Come forward to endorse?

I hope & trust we do it sooner than later.

On conscious / Unconscious and School Education

contradiction" - Maulana Wahiduddin Khan : Times of India (9th July 2010 :

2.Essay by Ashok Malik titled "High Demand, short supply" on school education

India is relevant and timely. Parents are ready willing and ready to spend on
the quality education of their children. They obviously want better labs,
play grounds furniture and equipped libraries in the schools where their kids
study. I dont think it is logical for the government to come in between , when
parents are ready to spend more and schools are ready to maintain high
quality.!

Ya I agree to the over all temperament of the write up. Personally I would like to say that ... basic disciplines like Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Ethics, Philosophy should get their proper representation in the Management Curricula. Teaching by individual experts / professors in these basic disciplines should be encouraged further.

Bliss

"We are the supreme bliss personified Brahmn. It is our own self that dwells in
all. Thappiness that is experienced in the world is in fact just glimpse of
self-bliss. It is the bliss of your own inner self that is experienced as being
derived from the external objects due to ignorance"

At Random from Lbn.Raj / July 7, 2010

Sanjiv Kaura says , “ the best way to find happiness is to not chase it”. I think it is right. Happyness is a wonderful phenomenon. If you remember well,…..you will be happy today because you were not happy yesterday, you are happy because your friend is not happy, you are happy today because your yesterday was so cool and enjoyable. You feel happy today because your yesterday was not so comfortable., you feel happy because you have physical ailments which are not so severe and dangerous like one of your friends. The concept of happiness is much discussed….debated over ages. Now see ….. according to Sanjib, University of Pennsylbania is offering a Masters degree in happiness …. Wonderful. Don’t forget to visit my group in orkut titled …. “happy librarians”. The most mysterious thing about happiness is that every one wants to be happy..

Attention Matters

Attention Matters

The article written by Marquerite is thought provoking. She says : the much
desired attention is missing these days, multi tasking is getting replaced by
uni tasking, it is important to pay attention to others around us, proper
attention to others leads to friendliness, she says, " We need to learn to pay
attention to our entire life, not just part of it".

It is indeed a good piece of advice to all and specially professionals, about
ATTENTION AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN OUR LIVES. Librarians like other true
professionals need to digest the art and science of best practices with regard
to giving our attention to the stake holder/ member.

Best wishes

Shri V.L.Kalyane .. a librarian at large!!!!!

1st July 2010,
My dear friend librarian at large Shri Kalyane,

I never realised last time may be about 7 months back when I met you at your residence that that could be the last meeting with you. The amount of time available with me at your residence roughly say about two to three hours in let us say about three times was never sufficient forme to talk to you. And I could see in your eyes that you wanted me to stay at your place for some time. What to to do I had to go to Thane ... Kalwwa to reach my residence..... by train. I really wanted to speak to you when you were alone with me some times may be on a road side ... or under a tree or .... may be a lot of time when we could walk a lot ... kms together. My dream and wish of spending endless time with you could not realise.  The so called desire to communicate....exchange views ... remained unfulfilled. My mind never agrees to the fact that you are not around in a physical sense. You are so much mixed up in my thoughts and ideas … and ofcourse philosophy. Now there is no need of any email or phone or wireless to communicate to you….. you can very well read my lines as I type…from where ever you are. Shall I think that my meetings….discussions with you ended…with your detachment from your body……Idont think so ….. the physical connectivities have their own limitations….now you are beyond your limitations….may be I am right…. I can get connected … as and when I want…as and when I feel like. There is so much to be discussed…. There is so much to be argued… … how do I find you live with me … There are many subjects and topics which we both did not deliberate… I am so curious to have your point of view … philosophy on so many diverse topics. What do I do dear? How do I elicit your thoughts now. ?... May be I look foolish in thinking the way I am thinking now. May be whatever you shared in terms of ideas …. Represent … n number of thoughts … and opinions … May be if I start reading whatever you wrote and published ….could be I may get a glimpse of your other thoughts.

The glowing face of that Kalyane …. Young energetic ….thoughtful… is so green in my mind.  May be initially you took some time to decide whether you should ever interact with me. Ya thosedays … you just arrived at my institute from a sister organization of ICAR. The very look , attitude … drew me towards you. Your dry…passionate …non childish attitude towards knowledge, writing, publishing …. And a craze for writing and publishing drew me may be close to you. Ya I can remember now … you were not realy liking the things you were doing for your job. You had some other things .. close to your heart. How can we expect our likes and dislikes to pair with job and its requirements. May what we are passionate about .. may or may not be linked to our professions and jobs.

Ya … you used to ask me … mumble… like “ I should have been more into active science … than science communication or science administration, …. How do I coincide my interests with that of my job and work” .  If if I remember wel I told you … don’t try to relate … do what is close to your chest … in your free time. But then you did not still discover … what is that which is between librarianship….. science …. And philosophy. You know we had endless sessions in discovering …. A subject…. Topic for you to get fruitfully engaged in. And it was not for so long … a wait for you to stumble at some areas like “Productivity Studies”. Ya you did and were doing something about Sugarcane Breeding Institute….ya those exercises became … one of your first few published papers. Then you stumbled upon terms like Science of Science and Sociology of Science .. gradually to discover …. What later engaged you for years together…. “Scientometrics”, Bibliometrics”, Librametry”, etc. The strikingly interesting was the fact of how yoyu will work l…… and where will you be able to get material and data for “Scientometric Works”. May be we then suddenly … got fascinated upon the idea of Individual scientometric portraits. As you realize… we were not sure … if it could ever be accepted by librarians or scientists …. We were not realy sure… how it is going to work further. And you got me involved with you in publishing informetric portrait of a botanist…….. and the story’s….first line was drawn….. And then you were drawn towards areas of my interests … u know we ended up publishing papers on “empathy in public librarianship”, Round the clock Librarianship etc. Then you came to Mumbai and my be you came a bit closer to what is dearer to your heart….. that is the world of Publication….hope the days you spent at Mumbai as Publication Officer were gratifying for you.

I still remember those endless hours at Hyderabad … which we spent on road sides… or under a tree … making our families wait for us behind at homes. It was indeed an intoxication which we were in … and were really not bother about what people thought about us. Hats off Kalyane …. You had the charisma to draw like minded youngsters towards topics of your interest …. Ramesh, Hanji, Venkataramana, me at Hyderabad and Kademani, Anil …and Idont remember many names of your co-authors at Mumbai… cannot ever be able to forget you and their association with you. You really deserve to be called an “author maker”.

People must be talking a lot about your contributions now ….must be talking a lot about how you carelessed your family. I am sure  your wife and your lively beautiful kids will never complain about what you did not do to them. I am sure what you did … overpowers on what you did not do to them. Let God give shower all courage and confidence to them … to excel passionately in whatever they are engaged in.

People say .. you suffered a lot in your last days …. But I am sure you ended your journey gracefully. All great things in life take their fitting prices / fitting tolls. And you paid for it!!!

You became an unforgettable name in Indian Librarianship by initiating new chapters in Scientometrics, Informetrics and Bibliometrics. You were indeed a librarian by passion, zeal and interest and now you are a librarian at large!!! Indeed now you are a librarian at large!!! Hats off to you my friend. My interactions with you now I believe are more intense than when you were around. Best wishes … may your soul rest in peace. Hats Off.

The power of a book .....!!!!!!!!!!

JUNE 28, 2010

THE POWER OF A BOOK

It is beyond arguments that knowledge is power and the power of knowledge make books and other containers powerful and significant. And the books embodying knowledge have continued to  treasure people to relish, preserve and conserve.
Witness the power the book "Chitrangada" authored by the Great Poet Tagore, five member team reach the place and the building which could have inspired Gurudev to author the famous dance drama. Books / and other containers of knowledge bring value to the places, buildings and situations and ideas. That is the power of knowledge and books. Hats off! The team now is pursuing the case of declaring this almost in shambles building in Pandua as a world heritage site. Best wishes. (Source of Information : Times of India, 28 June 2010)

We should stop hopping on wrong / deviant sides of great artists and scientists and creative people.

Saturday, the 26th of June 2010

1.We should stop hopping on wrong / deviant sides of great artists and scientists and creative people.  Very seldom a genius groomed in a systematic disciplined education expresses his/her genius ness. Good or bad we need to be bit tolerant about the deviations of the so called performers / creative people. I don't know what others have to say on this.

2.Good news! Olins – a co founder of brand consulting frim Wolff Olins says, he is addicted to India.

3.Small events that happened, pains and pleasures of yester years have made what we are today.

4.There is no other joy or pleasure comparable to resting and relaxing …. Do it ……good for you.

Raj Librarian's musings

21/06/2010
Raj Librarian’s Musings:

1. Beautiful thought of Anjali Mendes caught me this Monday unawares, To learn something new, everyday is a gift. You realize this only if your mind is open to the world & to life…….. I learnt that discipline & punctuality & respect for people were crucial to advancement, both in terms of career & self development……In the course of my career & travels, meeting people, exchanging ideas- that have helped me to absorb & learn, to share & spread happiness, transcending geography, culture & relationships. It is time for the Librarians to imitate this first international fashion model late Anjali Mendes(Pierre Cardin), in absorbing & learning, sharing & spreading happiness, transcending happiness, transcending geography, culture & relationships(Inspiration : : Times of India: Speaking Tree 21/06/2010).

2. Librarians can not afford to be uninformed of the ideas/thoughts of writers, novelists like Siddharth Dhanvant. Here he is, “Today books are in the ring with Twitter and books are defeated by 140 characters……Cinema makes me feel like I am personally going out of print” The idea of re-rendering the thoughts of Siddhartha is only to sensi-tise librarians to come out of their narrow shells, be more responsive, be more informed, be in the fore front of ideas than being followers, cataloguers & indexers. We do have a legacy of scholarship. Librarians should continue to be scholars. No other way seems to be more realistic & challenging & meaningful (Inspiration: Siddharths paper: Times of India 21/06/2010)., towards career growth and professionalism.

3. Whether in Government, or Private/Corporate sector, librarians can’t afford to be their limited shells. They need to be more pragmatic, more outspoken & more relevant to real callings of work & organization. They need to be multitasking sooner or later to prove their nerves of professionalism. Have a look at what Norbert Nego wrote today with a caption “One thing at a time” (Inspiration: TOI 20/06/2010).

4. Times of India’s clipping…..”looking for company? Just rent a friend” (TOI 21/06/2010). Interesting indeed! How about saying, “Looking for information & knowledge? Just rent a Librarian!

It is quite natural for all of us to long for more and more joy, happiness and enjoyment .....

It is quite natural for every one to have more and more fun, joy and happiness. Time and again we feel unhappy and sad when we face a down. But now I do realise if there are downs in ones life .... how do we value ups and excellence .. and joy. Thank you downs .. you make me realise the importance of what i have .... make me realise the ups of my life ... make me realise the importance of the best of life that i have had. Life continues ..... with less or more of ups and downs ... Let me accept it as it is.... as that is the the best option.

Reading with difference

Reading with difference
Reading continues to be a part & amp; partial of habit of individuals in the modern knowledge society. Just like other seekers of knowledge librarians do read. Reading for the sake of reading
does not normally lead to value addition nor understanding the article we read. The book one reads should be related to one's background, understanding & relevance because according to law of conservation Knowledge neither gets destroyed nor can it be created. Then only what we read gets internalized. When we (librarians) read, we read as a reader only. We need to read browse &  access as librarians. The moment we wear the cap of a librarian what we read becomes more situational & more understandable, as all our works directly or indirectly are related to knowledge organization, knowledge storage and  knowledge retrieval/Dissemination. It is but obvious that we should keep our interest alive to know a more &  more about knowledge, its evolution, history &  eminence. We got down to right this words after reading a write up on "Throwing Light on Knowledge "By G.S. Tripathi…….Speaking tree: Times of India:08/05/2010. Librarians should not miss to read such educative & thought provoking write ups. The high light of the write up should be of interest to every one, librarians too : 1.Knowledge is continuous, 2. Knowledge liberates the mind, 3. Knowledge of the ultimate enables eternal liberation 4; Knowledge is transcendental perception.  5. According to Ralf W. Emerson" A man should learn to detect & watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within". The Ideas of Prof.G.S.Tripathy is so close and relevant  to our literature on knowledge organization. We must really keep learning more & more about knowledge organization from scholars like G.S.Tripathy because Knowledge is power.

Neilson expansion in India Librarians can't overlook

The CEO of Neilson a Global market research giant is around in India talking to Individuals & Business Groups. Interestingly Neilson's Globally successful tools: Buzzmetrics & Neurofocus obviously come closer to what few librarians are engaged in what are known as Bibliometrics, Bio Bibliometrics, Scientometric, & Webometrics. The tools/techniques may not sound similar but should be of much interest to librarians engaged in productivity, growth & measurement studies. Curious? Be generous to be curous to look at works and writings  of  V.L Kalyane, Kademani Basavaraj with regard to scientometrics & informetrics. If you are in still gripped by what I am talking about read news clipping titled Nielson bets big & bold on Desi Mart(Times Of India:07/05/2010). Have a good day.
