Are ILA peoples are sleeping??????????
Whether Indian Library Association members and Administrators are sleeping?? This question will came into your mind if you tried & tired when you click http://www.ila-india.org/. I asked this question in LIS forum. i think the ILA not working properly as the name was. If Indian Library Association doesn't maintain a website in the electronic era, what should it seeks, i think ILA used only for political purpose. According to some south India based Librarians, ILA is Delhi politics based librarians group, we never found any representation on that. So we don't believe ILA will be front runner in Library movement in India.
Now, I can say ILA should be reinstalled. We must delete some corrupted file and update new. Windows 98 or Dos version is suitable for ILA, XP/VISTA/LINUX we must think of it. Older people on the organization, if they are not ready to accept the change just backspaced from the authority and they should be insert key for young librarians.
Not only ILA it belongs to MLAI because they also don't have any websites. Let us bring "Dhoni Mania" in Library Associations, Library movements in India. : CONTRIBUTED BY ONE OF THE AUTHORS OF THIS BLOG viz thimms

SUGUNA'S CORNER - How gender friendly is the Library profession?
ILIs poll on the `status of Library Profession' has set me thinking. It requires more than a poll to respond. Nevertheless, I answered the question from amongst very many interesting options given. I chose the safest option although personally I have very raw feelings about the profession which I think I should keep to myself.
But I definitely feel that it would be useful to share my views on the Gender aspects of it.
Why I chose to migrate from my basic discipline, Agriculture throws light on some of these aspects.
Deadly combination!
In a way it was the other way round, it was Library science that I wanted to pursue over a base of some professional course, which happened to be agriculture in my case. In fact this was the advice given by Dr. Sreepathy Naidu, Ex. Librarian of S.V. University, Tirupati, to his students to guide their children into Library profession via some professional course. My mother happened to be in his class pursuing her B.Lib. Sci. and my career is the result.
Cool roof over your head!
But this idea was reinforced within myself on a particular hot summer afternoon when we saw two women library staff sitting under the comfort of a fan in an already cool Library building, while we had just returned from our Agronomy practicals class. While I enjoyed doing those planting, weeding and harvesting operations, I was not ready to take those tensions of `timely' operations in the rest of my life.
Wider choice!
Choosing library profession, facilitates a wider choice while selecting your `spouse'. Whomever you marry, be it in Amalapuram or in America, you can be sure of having a Library and hence sure of having a profession for yourself. It is not the case with Agriculture.
Under one roof!
Once, a couple discovered very lately, that their professions don't match. That means they can never get jobs at the same place even if they manage to get high level recommendations. One works on Oceans and the other on Deserts! Difficult to co-exisit!! (We don't know, with climatic change it could be possible!!). But, then one of them switched to Library profession so that they could nest! (I don't remember the exact disciplines but it was something similar to this combination)
The top most and ...
Gender suitability is not the same to all the positions in a Library. Even when they are capable, at certain times, it becomes difficult for them to `attend to' or `stay late' or make `surprise visits on Holidays', because of their obvious domestic responsibilities.
Some women, (like me) have a tendency to do all the things by themselves and fail to delegate or effectively manage others. In that case the first position is not suitable.
Another job which women cannot handle in a library is to shelve, take out or otherwise handle large bound volumes. I found it very difficult during my pregnancy but was not complaining about it outwardly as in those days we were not talking `such' issues.
At your own pace!
It is this property of the `Library profession' that gave me the facility/luxury of working from home. Certain jobs like Cataloguing and Classification are intellectual and demand a good amount of concentration, undisturbed by the administrative responsibilities and obligations in a Library. These jobs could better be done away from a library. This is what I am doing now as a free lancer. It is not totally new in our family, as my sister Smt. Kameswari, a Library professional herself and wife of a Librarian, used to prepare entries on cards for Kendreeya Vidyapeeth in Tirupati. I am using computer instead!

Choosing library profession, facilitates a wider choice while selecting your `spouse'. Whomever you marry, be it in Amalapuram or in America, you can be sure of having a Library and hence sure of having a profession for yourself. It is not the case with Agriculture.
Under one roof!
Once, a couple discovered very lately, that their professions don't match. That means they can never get jobs at the same place even if they manage to get high level recommendations. One works on Oceans and the other on Deserts! Difficult to co-exisit!! (We don't know, with climatic change it could be possible!!). But, then one of them switched to Library profession so that they could nest! (I don't remember the exact disciplines but it was something similar to this combination)
The top most and ...
Gender suitability is not the same to all the positions in a Library. Even when they are capable, at certain times, it becomes difficult for them to `attend to' or `stay late' or make `surprise visits on Holidays', because of their obvious domestic responsibilities.
Some women, (like me) have a tendency to do all the things by themselves and fail to delegate or effectively manage others. In that case the first position is not suitable.
Another job which women cannot handle in a library is to shelve, take out or otherwise handle large bound volumes. I found it very difficult during my pregnancy but was not complaining about it outwardly as in those days we were not talking `such' issues.
At your own pace!
It is this property of the `Library profession' that gave me the facility/luxury of working from home. Certain jobs like Cataloguing and Classification are intellectual and demand a good amount of concentration, undisturbed by the administrative responsibilities and obligations in a Library. These jobs could better be done away from a library. This is what I am doing now as a free lancer. It is not totally new in our family, as my sister Smt. Kameswari, a Library professional herself and wife of a Librarian, used to prepare entries on cards for Kendreeya Vidyapeeth in Tirupati. I am using computer instead!

Muslim scientists and clerics have called for the adoption of Mecca time to replace GMT, arguing that the Saudi city is the true centre of the Earth.
The call was issued at a conference held in the Gulf state of Qatar under the title: Mecca, the Centre of the Earth, Theory and Practice.
One geologist argued that unlike other longitudes, Mecca's was in perfect alignment to magnetic north.
He said the English had imposed GMT on the rest of the world by force when Britain was a big colonial power, and it was about time that changed.

Time management
Dear all,
As you know everybody in this world has a fixed time of 24 hours a day. Some of us have not much to do and are always trying to find out ways and means of how to spend time and get engaged. Some of us are not so busy and not so free. Some of us are very busy...and are running and running to complete so many things within this 24 hours a day. What seems to be important is how many things we accomplish or do, what is the quality of work done, how important are the things that we do. How important are our works as judged by others. Are we happy about what we are doing and what we are not doing. This is one of the big game every one is playing with time in this world. Time management is one of the most important thing that a successful leader or person handles successfully.
What ultimately is important is are we doing all the things that are dearer to hearts....or we are always trying to please others...continuously.
One of the secrets of success according to me is , one who does things dearer to his heart normally is appreciated by every one....and the time spent is justified. Let us do things dearer to our self and our own uniqueness. Happy time management!

General considerations * ABCD is alligned with the CISIS/1660 version 5.2 platform, and will eventually be made compatible with later versions. This means that the inverted file entries are 60 characters long, and will increase in length in the ISIS-NBP based version. * ABCD is compatible with programming languages accepted by the GNU licences, i.e. PHP, Java, Javascript, Python, etc. The current version of ABCD is written in PHP v.5. * The system is totally language independent. The product will be made available in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese by end of 2008, and can be translated into other languages in the same way the CDS/ISIS applications always were.Cataloguing moduleThe main feature of the cataloguing module is that it accepts different database structures in a transparent way. Each database has itsown configuration files which ABCD interprets in order to apply the necessary procedures to manage each information structure. Thisfollows the same philosophy as CDS/ISIS. Each database has its own FDT (Field Definition Table), etc.The first version of ABCD has the following functions available: * User control through a database defining username, login, password, user level (Administrator, Operator, Librarian, End user, etc.), where specific information sources and access rights are established. * Database creation in three modalities: 1. Creating new databases in the traditional, four-step CDS/ISIS way: defining the FDT, a worksheet, a display format (PFT) and an indexing format (FST). ABCD generates the necessary environment files and creates the database in the Web server. 2. Copying an existing database from the Web server, and making changes afterwards. 3. Creating a database in the Web server based on a Winisis database available on the local machine. The ABCD system performs all the necessary conversions for the change of operative environment. * Management of multiple structures, providing templates for the separate entry of subfields. The structures can be based on MARC21, UNIMARC, LILACS, CEPAL, AGRIS, or any other ad-hoc structure that the user prefers. ABCD gives the user an extraordinarily wide capacity to define the FDT. It is possible to use repeatable subfields, to give names to subfields and to associate special help messages, pick-lists, etc. to each of them. * Dynamic building of data entry worksheets based on specifications given in the FDT. This table contains not only the specification of the ISIS fields proper, but also the characteristics which the fields will deploy in the worksheets (textbox, select, checkbox options, html area, text area), as well as the facilities to present controlled vocabularies related to the fields. * Capture of controlled vocabulary through authority files, obtained from the same or external databases. This feature is managed through inverted files. * Capture of controlled vocabulary through tables defined in TXT files. * Identification of fields requiring association to external resources (images, pdf, xls, etc) in order to upload these to the server. * Management of different kinds of records in each database, presenting the adequate worksheet for each type. * Management of multiple worksheets, dynamically defined by the user. * Access to records through the MFN, advanced search or alphabetical listing of a field defined as the main entry. * Creation, editing and deletion of records. * Presentation of search results using various display formats. * Printing module allowing different print formats and sorting criteria (depending on the number of records). 90/10 PRINCIPLE OF STEPHEN COVEY
DISCOVER THE 90/10 PRINCIPLE

Discover the 90/10 Principle.It will change your life (at least the way you react to situations).What is this principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react.What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us.We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic.We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%.How? ……….By your reaction.You cannot control a red light. but you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.Let's use an example.You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just happened.What happens next will be determined by how you react.You curse.You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus.Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit.After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home.When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.Why? …. Because of how you reacted in the morning.Why did you have a bad day?A) Did the coffee cause it?B) Did your daughter cause it?C) Did the policeman cause it?D) Did you cause it?The answer is “D".You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.Here is what could have and should have happened.Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, "Its ok honey, you just need to be more careful next time". Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having.Notice the difference?Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different.Why?Because of how you REACTED.You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reaction.Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle. If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You don't have to let the negative comment affect you!React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out etc.How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you lose your temper? Pound on the steering wheel? A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off) Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket? Do you try and bump them?WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin your drive?Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.You are told you lost your job.Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job.The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take outpour frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on.Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger. Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse.Now you know the 90-10 principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results. You will lose nothing if you try it. The 90-10 principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle.The result?Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache. LIBRARY AUTOMATION
Library Automation – Library Automation with the help of a function all library. Automation package in a computer, the house keeping tasks can be performed faster with extra benefits like better inventory mechanisms , facility for generation of a number of report which are unattainable so easily in the manual system with automation , service information resided in the registers and manuals exclusively kept at the custodians of service in the manual system were now available to other stake holder. It is now easy to monitor the status also able to know the status of a book of interest as issued/ reserved and to find out issued to whom .Both users and staff have become more sensible and careful in dealing with their usage and work after the advent of the automation systems due to the feeling that ‘someone’s watching . Many libraries follow a primitive automation culture where computer is kept on top of the desk and below that the still have the register and manual close to hand giving more emphasis to them than automation. Being largely deprived of chances to perform and shine unlike much other profession, some professional feel

Know your Librarians Series
Dr. RAMA DEVI, TELLA
I am working as a Documentation Officer as well as Associate Professor I/C, at Centre on Rural Documentation of the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Hyderabad, India and I have an experience of 20 years under various capacity in various institutes like college and A.P. Agricultural University. I was awarded Fulbright Scholarship under the subject Information Science and Technology for the year 2003-2004 and working as Mortenson Associate of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign from Aug 28th to Feb 28, 2004. The focus of the project is on e-learning technologies for rural development communities.
I have a Bachelor degree from Andhra University with Economics, Psychology and Social Work. During my graduation I was selected as student representative for the Board of studies in the year 1977-78 from the Social Work Department of Andhra University. I have a post graduate degree in Social Work with specialization in community development besides a Master in Library Science. I was awarded a PhD on “Use of Grey Literature by Social Scientists by the Osmania University, Hyderabad
I am conversant with software like LIBSYS, CDS/ISIS, MS Office, FOXPRO, SPSS, Page Maker, Publisher, Corel Draw, HTML and HTML editors like Front Page, Dream weaver and award winning text editor Note Tab Light etc. I am also associated with bringing out the CORD publications like Directory of Rural Development Institutions in India, and periodicals like CORD Alerts, CORD Abstracts, CORD Index, Holding list of periodicals and Handbook on Online Resources etc.
I also took an active role in the development and management of Computerised Library and Information Clearinghouse (CLIC) database using various sources including Internet, which we are planning to make it web enabled for the rural development functionaries at different levels. The CLIC has been developed to serve as a central reference point for information on all aspects of rural development. CLIC caters to the needs of NIRD faculty and the development community. Associated with various projects like Library Automation, Bar-coding of Library Collection , Information needs of RD community, Functioning of Public Libraries in Maharashtra and Andra Pradesh
Taking advantage of having the combination of subjects like Social Work and Library and Information Science, I got the unique experience to work for two years in the development of Public Information Kiosks (PIKs) for Rural Development which was established by NIRD to bridge the Digital Divide between the urban and rural areas. It is a specialized project for creation of awareness among the rural people about various development programmes. It works as an Information and Communication center using information technologies. I used my expertise in identifying the information needs of the rural poor by conducting a survey in four states of India, and in the selection of the content to be put in the PIKs and its management at different stages.
I have attended many Seminars/Conferences/Workshops and presented papers to keep abreast with the latest developments in my specialization. I have also presented a paper in an International Conference on Grey Literature, organized by Grey Net (Use of Grey Literature in Rural Development: a case study) which was held at Washington, D.C on 3-4th October 1999. I published around30 articles in various journals including IAALD and Public Library Quarterly and in different conference proceedings. I traveled almost all states in India, to address the topics such as Digital Divide, Grey Literature,, Social Marketing, Information Services, Virtual libraries, Web Technologies, Web publishing Best Practices in Library Usage and Readership Enhancement (LURE), Public Libraries in India, A different Mind-Set needed for Modern day librarians, Human Resource Management in the Digital Era, Building up Digital Resources, Information Literacy and out reach services Impact of ICTs and E-Learning Technologies, Human Resource Management in the Digital era, Public Information Kiosks-an outreach center, consortia and partnership development etc.
As a part of my job, I am associated with various training programmes for the librarians like web technologies, Internet resources, and IT applications for library resource management, web publishing of information products and services, access to social science information in the Digital Era besides library and information services, technical processing, administration, grey literature, library automation, consortia and networking
During my academic studies, I obtained ranks in MSW, BLISC, MLISC and awarded prizes. I have been nominated as an active member in various associations and committees at the NIRD. I am actively involved in various professional associations in India
As a part of my Fulbright programme I have attended six weeks pre-academic programme in the University of Kansas. The programme covered the topics like Oral and written communication skills, academic report writing, cultural diversity etc. I was associated to the Mortenson Centre, (International Training Programmes) University of Illinois for six months . I audited Web Technology course for the Fall Semester. During my training I visited various libraries, attended various meetings/Conferences/Workshops and Seminars, and interacted with various experts and their projects. I presented a country paper in the Illinois Library Association (ILA) Annual Conference. I have also attended the ALA Mid winter meetings held at San Diego during Jan 9-14th, 2004. Recently I have completed successfully the web based workshop on “Electronic Collection development: Collecting and Organising Web Resources” from Kovacs Consulting Internet & Web Training , Ohio, USA

I am working as a Documentation Officer as well as Associate Professor I/C, at Centre on Rural Documentation of the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Hyderabad, India and I have an experience of 20 years under various capacity in various institutes like college and A.P. Agricultural University. I was awarded Fulbright Scholarship under the subject Information Science and Technology for the year 2003-2004 and working as Mortenson Associate of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign from Aug 28th to Feb 28, 2004. The focus of the project is on e-learning technologies for rural development communities.
I have a Bachelor degree from Andhra University with Economics, Psychology and Social Work. During my graduation I was selected as student representative for the Board of studies in the year 1977-78 from the Social Work Department of Andhra University. I have a post graduate degree in Social Work with specialization in community development besides a Master in Library Science. I was awarded a PhD on “Use of Grey Literature by Social Scientists by the Osmania University, Hyderabad
I am conversant with software like LIBSYS, CDS/ISIS, MS Office, FOXPRO, SPSS, Page Maker, Publisher, Corel Draw, HTML and HTML editors like Front Page, Dream weaver and award winning text editor Note Tab Light etc. I am also associated with bringing out the CORD publications like Directory of Rural Development Institutions in India, and periodicals like CORD Alerts, CORD Abstracts, CORD Index, Holding list of periodicals and Handbook on Online Resources etc.
I also took an active role in the development and management of Computerised Library and Information Clearinghouse (CLIC) database using various sources including Internet, which we are planning to make it web enabled for the rural development functionaries at different levels. The CLIC has been developed to serve as a central reference point for information on all aspects of rural development. CLIC caters to the needs of NIRD faculty and the development community. Associated with various projects like Library Automation, Bar-coding of Library Collection , Information needs of RD community, Functioning of Public Libraries in Maharashtra and Andra Pradesh
Taking advantage of having the combination of subjects like Social Work and Library and Information Science, I got the unique experience to work for two years in the development of Public Information Kiosks (PIKs) for Rural Development which was established by NIRD to bridge the Digital Divide between the urban and rural areas. It is a specialized project for creation of awareness among the rural people about various development programmes. It works as an Information and Communication center using information technologies. I used my expertise in identifying the information needs of the rural poor by conducting a survey in four states of India, and in the selection of the content to be put in the PIKs and its management at different stages.
I have attended many Seminars/Conferences/Workshops and presented papers to keep abreast with the latest developments in my specialization. I have also presented a paper in an International Conference on Grey Literature, organized by Grey Net (Use of Grey Literature in Rural Development: a case study) which was held at Washington, D.C on 3-4th October 1999. The course will also include the creation of a mental model to structure your site using content maps and task analysis. Finally, the webinar will focus on the effect of labeling and tagging of words chosen to increase the usability of your site and will provide real-life examples from Chiara’s work as an IA consultant to illustrate the concepts covered.
