On Self Knowledge and Free Will.

A Thought breakfast / May 11, 2011

  1. Self Knowledge has always been the theme of the Illumined who know and teach God and the Self to be One.  As long as one believes himself to be separate from God, he will remain mortal to himself. – Lillian DeWaters
  2. The So called free will may just be an illusion when in reality, thoughts and actions gravitate towards a pre-fixed path ….. The true nature of our self is merely consciousness that observes. …. Free will remains the free will of an imaginary entity and its \ego.  Whether the future is scripted or not becomes a moot issue if the true nature of the self becomes clear – a speck of the unqualified consciousness that exists beyond time and space.  – Deepak M Ranade

Management practice graduating towards professionalism …
Rajashekhar Devarai
Chief Librarian, Asian School of Business Management, BBSR

Gossip having its roots in common sense and conventional wisdom is  close to hearts of humans. The beauty of gossip is that one need not do any exercise or work for it. One can just get engaged in and it  surrounds around human sensible events, behavior and happenings. It surrounds around concepts like status, prestige, honour, humiliation, insult, achievement, humour, failure etc. We all are party to gossips some time or the other. Psychologists of late acknowledge the importance of  gossip …. in relieving ones stress levels. How is it that gossip is relevant to the topic chosen for discussion today i.e., professionalism of management? In day-today gossips we find people in general,  using terms / phrases like : Occupation, profession, professionalism, be a professional, show your professionalism etc. But I doubt with what connotations and meanings we use theses terms and phrases. May be,  by being professional we mean to be more sincere …. more tactful …. more technical,  more smart … more educated and so on. By having such a limited meaning of the word profession and professionalism …. how close are we towards the actual meaning of these. I am not kidding, calling oneself a professional has almost become a fashion. ...................................  Last but not the least, we should acknowledge the contribution of Sociologists who have been studying occupations, jobs, works and crafts and of course Professions for quite some years. The field of study is popularly known as 'Sociology of Professions'. The trend reports brought out by Indian Council of Social Science Research are worth reading with regard to literature reviews on professions. It looks like an abrupt ending …. no I told you …. it is little more than a gossip …so gossips end abruptly. The view points are deliberately put in first person to make it a light reading. I don't think I will be able to make it more lighter a reading than this.  This discussion is little more than a gossip and common sense. If the intellectual curiosities of practicing managers / professionals is raised the purpose of the write up is served. The making of a profession and calling is more mysterious and historical than we  imagine. Have interest to know more … dil mangta hai more ? have a look at the recommended readings.

We all tend to be obsessed with past either good or bad , pleasant or unpleasant …. and land up or end up for no where to go.

Memories of Past

"The unsavory memories of the past should not become such convictions that bind us and restrict our freedom to evolve and grow.  Treat the present as a "present" a gift free of the past.  Let's wake up to dream about the wonderful future that beckons us" – Deepak M Ranade (Speaking Tree, Times of India, April 19, 2011).

We all tend to be obsessed with past either good or bad , pleasant or unpleasant …. and land up or end up for no where to go. End up and find no way or time for the apparent or the present. It so happens that we are so much carried away by the past the past that went wrong …. and we miss the bus of the present which is more real and which is more under our control. It is time we realize that what went right or wrong was just alright ….what is infront of us right now is important because …… that was our future some time back and that would be our past after some time. Let us enjoy the present…..feel the present…..give our best to the present….which will take care of our future past and future future. Trust me, be fully present in the present, be smiling. Be smiling as it is going to be your past and future.

My professor's (Prof.Leela Mullatti) precious/valued letters to me (Rajashekhar Devarai)

April 19, 2011

Dear Rajashekhar,

I red your paper (Devarai, R.S and Ramesh LSRCV. 1999. Librarianship and the professional model : a sociological tutorial and critique.- Library Science with a slant to Documentation and Information Studies, 36(3). It is a very well studied and well written paper. To be able to give competent comments I myself  must be competent in the field. You have advanced too much ahead of me which is my pleasure and pride. I like your concluding remark very well. For last 15 or more years, i have not been into any studies. Relaxing and improving my physical and mental status through Vipassana and other forms of exercises has been my main involvement, because i did not want to be a drag on my busy children.
One of my classmates Mrs Sheela Nadakarni was a librarian at Bombay university.and my another friend's husband Mr Deshpande was quite a competent librarian. I dont think either of them use even computers. I will let you know if i get any more information.i tried to register for netlog without success. Pl send mail on email. Love.

Problems refine, redefine and lead you towards realization ... LbnRaj

Problems

"Problems make us more compassionate.  They help us mature, and make us more resistant and the same time create sensitivity in us ….. Remember that from dirt emerges the beautiful lotus, from the scorching heart comes the shower of relief and from the depth of pain springs joy" Arup Mitra (The speaking Tree, Times of India, April 18, 2011)

The power of problems so overwhelming and over powering that we get lost in tremendous grief. We succumb to problems …. We rarely are able to see the green pastures that are opened up by each and every small or big problem. Problems can work for us for fine tuning of our skills and talents and innate strengths. Problems are a blessing …. Only thing we should not give up on our dreams and wishes. Hold on to your dream …. Hold on to your inner urges and go ahead ….. if nothing works for you …. Just hold on … every thing will be alright … just hold on….wait what you cannot resolve … solve …. Face …. God enables … God facilitates in such a way that …. A way is found once again under so much of grief and sorrow and darkness. There comes the small back … there comes a new hope. Librarians are people who normally don't succumb to problems …. They are winners as they leave it to God for the work of healing and soothing. Cheers …. !!!!! Face the problems …. Be honest …. Be yourself …. There is a way out … for sure just trust yourself …. Trust God.

Friday musings of LibrarianRaj on BRICS, Mind and Net Access by Rural India: April 15, 2011

Friday musings of LibrarianRaj on BRICS, Mind and Net Access by Rural India:
April 15, 2011
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday musings of LbnRaj : April 15, 2011
1.      Times of India editorial asserts that the BRICS (Brazil, Russia,
India, China and South Africa) is clearly an association in the making .
Ya good it is in the making … many things in their beginnings would
be such that people at large even hesitate to acknowledge the
beginning. To me it is not the beginning or making …. It is the
great beginning and a great making. Frank Wisner says that there is
no political connectivity between BRIC powers ….. so what …..
mutual interests make strong connectivity's. Let us watch and see
…. How this force falsify all tall reservations of experts and politicians.
2.      TOI editorial says …. "Net access could transform
rural India…"  Any thing that is in the making raise doubts of every one …
.. IT intrusion in the rural India will bring to the fore
the un intentional ….. not thought of alternative for development. A true
democracy may be kindled by this so called IT Intrusion. Believe me.
Librarians have a lot to do in this regard …. Let us watch
and see how they show their indispensability.
3.      Shri Shri Nimishananda on the Purpose
of Mind : "Allow others  the freedom to be as they are, without
imposing your mindset of thoughts and ideas.  Have faith and belief
that God is in you.  Spend some time quietly everyday thinking about your
inner self and chanting the name of God.  This way our mind which seeks
information can be changed into a mind meant for the transformation of o
ur very life itself from human to Divine" (Times of India, Speaking Tree,
April 15, 2011)

Heart and Healing, "Live your life from your heart.  Share from your heart.  And your story will touch and heal people's souls" – Melody Beattie (Heart of Healing : Sacred Space, Times of India, April 8, 2011)

Every one knows this. Every one realizes this, when some one works from heart one feels elated and light and most likely whether one fails or passes …. he does not either repent or be over joyous,,, one will just be happy and contented. Feelings of let every one be happy ….let every one be as good as and as fair as we are. Librarians let us work from our hearts ….. the readers would appreciate us from their hearts. Let us disseminate information with a personal note and touch. What we do with this way from our hearts has no parallel. Basically every one works from ones heart …..it is only the undesirable learning and training that at times makes us not to work from our hearts.  And the more they are happy more we will be.  LbnRaj ; lotus5673@yahoo.co.in ; http://indialibrarian-intl.blogspot.com ;

Subject: hi
sorry, I haven't kept in touch with you more, but FB never seems to show me your interesting posts. I wish I could make it so I could see your posts more easily but once I start clicking on your page maybe it will come up more.
I've been very busy in school, nursing school for practical nursing for the last 1.5 years, so haven't had much time to write much or do much outside of school, study and work part time.
I will graduate in Dec, God willing.
My 26 yr old son is in Calgary, Alberta. He went out to do construction but it didn't work out well for him b/c his boss suffered a serious depression and never went to work for 2 months, so my son is returning home today. It is about 6000 km away. Since he is out of money, he plans to hithhike home. Temp is about 5C during the day. He plans to go to a truck stop and get a long ride with some truckers. I hope it works out for him.
I see you are a lib for a School of Business Management. I know you've been a lib for a long time but I didn't know you had this position. Is it a relatively new one for you or was I just not aware?
What is new with you and your family?
Well I must go now.
Take care.

Copyright Clearance Center Launches Get It Now for Academic Institutions

Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a not-for-profit organization and provider of licensing solutions, announced the launch of Get It Now. The service complements academic institutions' interlibrary loan (ILL) borrowing services by providing immediate fulfillment of full-text articles from unsubscribed journals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through a single, cost-effective, and easy-to-use application, integrated directly into a user's workflow.

Get It Now was developed with the participation of The California State University system and the Information Delivery Services (IDS) Project at The State University of New York at Geneseo. It includes content from leading journal publishers, including Elsevier, John Wiley & Sons, Wolters Kluwer, Nature Publishing Group, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Additional publishers are being added on an ongoing basis.

If patrons wish to read articles from a journal not currently subscribed to by their institution's library, they can either choose to borrow the articles via traditional ILL or click the Get It Now link within their search results and have the content emailed to them. Average turnaround time for Get It Now articles is less than five minutes. According to a recent study in the journal College and Research Libraries, the average time for a traditional ILL delivery is between five and seven days. Get It Now delivers high-quality, accessible, full-color PDFs of journal content in minutes. It eliminates the need for credit card transactions by offering monthly institutional invoicing and has several safeguards in place to prevent misuse. Get It Now can also be accessed by librarians via an "Addon" in OCLC's ILLiad application.

Get It Now supplements CCC's Annual Copyright License for Academic Institutions, allowing institutions that hold the license to obtain content through the Get It Now service and share it internally in many ways, including email, postings to e-reserves and course management systems, inclusion in coursepacks or for classroom handouts and scholarly research.

What say I have on Success, Digital Divide and Proposed ban on Josheph Lelyveld’s book on Mahatma Gandhi …. LibrarianRaj responds : April 6, 2011

What say I have on Success,  Digital Divide and Proposed ban on Josheph  Lelyveld's book on Mahatma Gandhi …. I respond : April 6, 2011
1.      I fully agree with Sukhabodhananda when he says …."irrespective of the best effort one puts in, you have to face both success and failure at different times."  Yes success and failures are part and parcel of our lives. We need to accept failures honestly …. to realize the importance of succeeding. One who has not failed … it is said has never passed.
2.       A new lesson for Librarians on Digital Divide : Digital divide has new avtar now with Russia's next president's advice on keeping abreast on people's aspirations and feelings. A whopping $220 will have to be shelled out for a project that intends to compile all the information that is elicited by common man in Russia by way of blogs and social networking sits. It is indeed a path breaking direction. Every one … every country in this regard will fall in line one day or the other … sooner or later. What do librarians learn out of this?
3.      Joseph Lelyveld's book on Mahatma has created one more furore. When do we become little tolerant of honest and artistic expressions of  creative people?
