LEADERSHIP AND SELF - DECEPTION : GETTING OUT OF THE BOX / ARBINGER INSTITUTE-A BOOK REVIEW by Rajashekhar Devarai & J .Padmavathi

LEADERSHIP AND SELF - DECEPTION : GETTING OUT OF THE BOX / ARBINGER INSTITUTE-A BOOK REVIEW by Rajashekhar Devarai & J .Padmavathi

"We should look long and carefully at ourselves before we consider judging others"(Moliere,1666).

1.INTRODUCTION

1.1 Ever since the conduct of Hawthorne experiments which lead towards the historical finding of Hawthorne effect during 1920s and 30s by Elton Mayo and other Harward researchers at Western Electric Co. , there is a steady increase in the studies correlating productivity and creativity to that of human/ social relations at work. Applied: Sociology, Economics , Political Science and Psychology have contributed a lot deciphering the hitherto mysterious/unknown factors which contributed substantially for industrial productivity. The importance and relevance of the knowledge base of Social Sciences need not be over emphasized in many fields, be it in productivity, creativity or Technology. Of late people skill organizations and scholarly consortiums with professional manpower specializing in Business, Economics, Law, Education, Management, psychology, Sociology, are very effective in extending solutions to institutions and organizations on a turn key project basis. One of such organizations is The Arbinger Institute whose recent book titled , "Leadership and the Self Deception ..... " is under special focus here for a review. The institute has classified the title under Business/Psychology.

1.2.IMPORTANCE OF THE THE STUDIES ON SELF

The concept of "self' is very unique in Philosophy and in all sciences and social sciences whose focus directly or indirectly is on Human Nature. It will be very useful to readers of "Fashion and Beyond" in the context of this book review, to have meanings and conceptual clarifications of the concept of self
and its various manifestations. These conceptual clarifications and meanings assist to understand the stand point of the book under review.

1.2.1. Self:

Generally speaking self refers to the individuals conception of him/herself "Self is that aspect of the personality consisting of the individuals conception of himself. The way a person perceives himself is a result of his experiences with other people, the way they act toward him, and the impression he gets of their view of him"(Scot,1988).

1.2.2. Self Betrayal :

Based on Oxford Dictionary of synonyms and antonyms(1999), Self Betrayal could be defmed as traiting on oneself, being false on oneself, Conspiration on oneself.
1.2.3. Self Deception: Synonyms to the word self deception are: bluff, cheat, deceit, fraud, lie etc. (Oxford Dict. Of Syn. & Ant : 1999). Self Deception according toMartin,M.W(19995) is, "a purposeful action to avoid unpleasant truths and painful topics (about oneself or the world); it is an unintentional process of denial, avoidance, or biased perception; it is a mental state resulting from such action or process, such as ignorance, false belief, wishful thinking, unjustified opinions, or lack of clear awareness. Thus parents tend to exaggerate the virtues of their children, lovers disregard clear signs of unreciprocated affection, overeaters rationalize away the need to diet, patients dying of cancer pretend to themselves that their health is improving. Philosophers and thinkers likeJoseph Butler, Kierkegaard, Hiedegger, Sartre, and Fingarette have substantially dealt on the concept of Self Deception" (Martin, 199 5).

1.2.4. Looking glass self:

The Term was introduced by C.H.Cooley(Mind, Self and Society) in1902. Looking glass self is a persons' perception of himself as determined by the way he imagines he appears to others. It is the conception of self that is formed as a consequence of the attitudes other people have toward him. (Scot,1988)

1.2.5. Generalized Other :

" A generalized and integrated conception of the expectations, attitudes and meanings of a group, an abstract social class, or the other significant persons in a social situation, that has been incorporated in the thinking of an individual and helps to determine his behavior. A person develops a generalized other through the process of social interaction, first by taking over the attitudes, expectations and points of view of significant other persons." G.H.Meads contribution is also is note worthy in this
regard. (Scott,1988).

1.2.6. "I": A hypothetical aspect or phase of the total self corresponding to what the individual regards as the unique aspect of his self. The term was used by G.H.Mead who suggested that the "I" and the "Me" together constitute the personality or self.(Scott,1988).

1.2.7. "Id" : In Freudian theory, the aspect of the personality that consists of unorganized, innate, instinctual impulses seeking immediate gratification. (Scott, 1988).

2.Focus of Management Consultancies and the realm of Self:

It is quite interesting to note that there are organizations which are ready to tackle human relation and people skills problems of a wide range of industries and institutions. It is note worthy that an Institution like Arbinger works at the level of "self analysis" for interpreting the results and productivity of an organization.

2.1 Though the concept of Self, Self Betrayal and Self Deception are quite old as for as their coverage in philosophy and social sciences is concerned, their usage in solving practical problems of institutions and organizations is some what novel and interesting. The contents of the present work are relevant at individual, family, group and organizational level.

2.2.The book Leadership and Self Deception is chapterized into the following heads like : Self Deception and the Box, How we can get in the box, and How we get out of the box. The narration in the book runs in the form of dialogues between Senior executives Bud, Kate, and Lou of a company named Zagrum and a new entrant named Tom. They explain how self deception comes on the way of organizational progress by giving their own individual experiences. The instances and incidents brought out in this narration or more appropriately novel are meticulously worked out to be relevant and to the point. The Arbinger team equates some one under self
deception to be in "the box".

2.3. The Contents of the book can be summarized in the following points :

l.Self betrayal leads to self-deception and the "the box";
2.when you are in the box you cant focus on results;
3.your influence and success depends on being out of the box.;
4.you get out of the box as you cease resisting other people;
5.don't try to be perfect, do try to be better;
6.don't look for others boxes, do look for your own;
7.don't accuse others of being in the box, do try to stay out of the box yourself;
8.don't give up on yourself when you discover you have in the box. Do keep trying.;
9.don't deny you have been in the box when you have been. Do apologize, then just keep marching forward, trying to be more helpful to others in the future.;
10.don't focus on what others are doing wrong. Do focus on what you can do right to help;
ll.don't worry whether others are helping you. , do worry whether you are helping others.

3. To sum up Self Deception may be encountered by any individual. It starts with self betrayal leading towards being in the "BOX" and the individual will have a distorted view of himself and others around. The material brought out in the book is relevant to individuals in all walks of life including their family life and work place. Once the demon of SELF DECEPTION is rampant, both the individual and organizational progress will be in doldrums.

4. THIS WORK (LEADERSHIP AND SELF DECEPTION PRODUCED BY THE ARBINGER INSTITUTE) IS "A MUST READ" PIECE FOR ALL THOSE OF US, WHO HAVE NATURAL INCLINATION FOR KNOWING THE SECRETS, MYSTERIES AND WHIMS AND FANCIES OF OUR SO CALLED BEHAVIOUR, WHICH HOLDS THE KEY TO UNDERSTAND AS TO WHY WE BEHAVE THE WAY WE BEHAVE TOWARDS OTHERS AND AS TO WHY OTHERS BEHAVE TOWARDS US THE WAY THEY BEHAVE. DEFINITELY IT WILL BE A STEP FORWARD IF WE ATTEMPT TO UNDERSTAND HOW AND WHY WE BETRAY OUR OWN SELF AND HOW AND WHY WE GET INTO THE TRAP OF SELF DECEPTION AND GET INTO THE SO CALLED "BOX". WHAT A RELIEF TO FEEL THE EXPERIENCE OF GETTING OUT OF THE "BOX", AND WHAT A DELIGHT TO LOOK AT THE WORLD THAT LOOKS ENTERELY DIFFERENT ONCE WE ARE OUT OF THE BOX. THE PURPOSE OF THIS REVIEW IS BEST SERVED IF IT RAISES THE CURIOUSITY OF ADMINISTRATOR, TEACHERS, DESIGNERS AND TECHNOLOGISTS, SCIENTISTS TO READ THE BOOK.

5.The Arbinger Institute
The Arbinger Institute , a Management training and consulting firm and Scholarly consortium ,responsible for the contents of the book, was founded to translate the teams important work on self-deception - and its solution - into practical effect for individuals, families, and organizations worldwide. To cite from the book, "self deception is at the heart of the organizational failures. It is the reason many organizational problems seem so intractable - at their core they are self-deceptions; they resist solution." Members of Arbinger apply their energies to helping organizations reduce people problems and increase bottom-line results. They do this by helping clients implement Arbingers three phase Results System. Phase I of the system is introduced in this book. The change work of the institute is lead by philosopher Terry Warner and Duane Boyce, Jim Ferrel, and Paul Smith contribute to the deliberations as Managing Directors.

There's some mighty fine advice in these words, even if you're not superstitious. This Lotus Touts has been sent to you for good luck from the Anthony Robbins organization. It has been sent around the world ten times so far.

The Lotus Touts must leave your hands in 6 MINUTES. Otherwise you will get a very unpleasant surprise. This is true, even if you are not superstitious, agnostic, or otherwise faith impaired.

Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

FIVE.
When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.

ELEVEN.
Don't judge people by their relatives.

DR. TALWAR TAKES OVER AS VC OF MYSORE VARSITY

Mysore, Dec. 11 (ACP & DM)- The newly-appointed
Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University Prof. V.G. Talwar
took charge today.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. C.P. Siddhashrama handed
over charge to Prof. Talwar at the Crawford Hall.
Admirers of Prof. Talwar burst crackers outside the
Craw-ford Hall as he took charge.
The Governor-Chancellor Rameshwar Thakur
yesterday issued an order appointing Prof. V.G. Talwar,
Professor of Library and Information Science,
Mysore University, as new Vice-Chancellor.
The post was vacant following the retirement of Prof.
J. Shashidhara Prasad on Oct. 22 last year and many
hurdles came in the way of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor.
V.G. Talwar: A man of wide experience
At last, it has happened after a prolonged wait for more
than a year! The news is that Dr. V.G.Talwar, Professor
of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore,
has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Mysore. The academic and administrative profile of the
man who is going to head, lead and manage the affairs
of the University of Mysore for the next four years is
proof enough to indicate what the new Vice-Chancellor
is capable of.
Humility and down to earth temperament endowed
with practical wisdom are the hallmarks of the
personality of the new Vice-Chancellor. All those who
know him personally would agree with one voice that
it is indeed a great gesture that a man of simplicity
and self-effacement committed to quality-oriented
higher education has been elevated to the post of a
Vice-Chancellor of a prestigious University struggling
at the moment to keep up its reputation.
He has an uphill task in setting right certain irregularities
committed in the recent past. Harnessing pulls and
pressures of different sorts would be one of the
real challenges awaiting him as he takes up his new
assignment. Looking for and having right people as
part of his team management could go a long and
effective way in meeting the challenges ahead of him.
Having been an insider for many years could be a
great aid.
A man with a heart of wisdom derived from vast and
wide experience as teacher and administrator,
Prof.Talwar, known as VGT in the shortened version
of his name, is a well-known name in the academic and
administrative circle within and outside the University
of Mysore. There is no department that he is not familiar
with. He is aware of the ins and outs of almost all the
Sections at Crawford Hall by virtue of having served as
Registrar of the University for four years and four months
and being a Chairman or a member of one committee or
the other till date.
Prof.Talwar is also known for his outreaching sensitivity.
His friendly and helpful nature could be a great source
of strength and problems as well. A fine sense of a
compassionate worldview, thanks to his humble origin
and family background, pervades his reasoning and
discernments. Free from coterie culture, kitchen cabinet,
and mean and mud-slinging politicking, he has the art of
cultivating the spirit of accommodativeness lest ego
clashes and ghetto interests and conflicts should
overpower the management of academic and administrative
matters of the University.
As an aspirant for the post, he has shared his vision for
the development of the University of Mysore with some
of his friends besides formulating the same in a more
organised manner in his profile documentation made
available to the search committee that selected him as
one of the three persons recommended for the post.
If only politics and interventions of people with vested
interests do not bother him too much, we could count
on his intellectual acumen, dialogic imagination,
team-building spirit, practical wisdom for smooth
management of the University that has been blessed
with a special grant of one hundred crore by the
Government of India besides the other usual budget
already made available by the State Government
and the budget to be generated from local resources.

Respected Friends,

In the line of discussion raised by worthy friends regarding some of issues are as follows--------

1.   Professional accreditation of librarians in society,

2.   Quality of LIS Education at all level.

3.   Time bound Professional as well as technical  enhancement ,

4.   At par status in parent organisations,

5.   Removal of Financial and Administrative disparities ,

6.    Change of image from CIRUCLATION CLERK to KNOWLEDGE GENRATOR, KNOWLEDGE MANAGER, INFORMATION OFFICER and so on ,

7.   Library Services are as precious , priceless and very much mandatory than any other service in the parent organisation/body,

And this is not the end of issues at all.

All of us as LIS Professionals are well aware of all these issues and the irony of fate is that we do have the answers also.

But the million dollar question is that who speaks first?

Mere discussion on different forums and in conferences does not give any concrete result.

I think now the time has come that we all should stand up to change the nomenclature of LIS world. We should come forward and can ask the administrative machinery to change the various recommendations into authenticity.

We have number of LIS Associations not only in India but across the globe. Numbers of scholars are there who can sail the ship in right direction for next generation. We have library legislation in 10 states , lucrative recomendations of Knowledge Commisons are also there to guard the LIS issues.

So what we all are waiting for................

Regards,

Miss Charu Mathur.
Delhi.

LETTER TO PRIMEMINISTER

Dear Mr. Prime minister

I am a typical mouse from Mumbai. In the local train compartment which
has capacity of 100 persons, I travel with 500 more mouse. Mouse at
least squeak but we don't even do that.

Today I heard your speech. In which you said 'NO BODY WOULD BE SPARED'.
I would like to remind you that fourteen years has passed since serial
bomb blast in Mumbai took place. Dawood was the main conspirator. Till
today he is not caught. All our bolywood actors, our builders, our Gutka
king meets him but your Government can not catch him. Reason is simple;
all your ministers are hand in glove with him. If any attempt is made to
catch him everybody will be exposed. Your statement 'NOBODY WOULD BE
SPARED' is nothing but a cruel joke on this unfortunate people of India.

Enough is enough. As such after seeing terrorist attack carried out by
about a dozen young boys I realize that if same thing continues days are
not away when terrorist will attack by air, destroy our nuclear reactor
and there will be one more Hiroshima.

We the people are left with only one mantra. Womb to Bomb to Tomb. You
promised Mumbaikar Shanghai what you have given us is Jalianwala Baug.

Today only your home minister resigned. What took you so long to kick
out this joker? Only reason was that he was loyal to Gandhi family.
Loyalty to Gandhi family is more important than blood of innocent
people, isn't it?

I am born and bought up in Mumbai for last fifty eight years. Believe me
corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar. Look at all the
politician, Sharad Pawar, Chagan Bhujbal, Narayan Rane, Bal Thackray ,
Gopinath Munde, Raj Thackray, Vilasrao Deshmukh all are rolling in
money. Vilasrao Deshmukh is one of the worst Chief minister I have
seen. His only business is to increase the FSI every other day, make
money and send it to Delhi so Congress can fight next election. Now the
clown has found new way and will increase FSI for fisherman so they can
build concrete house right on sea shore. Next time terrorist can
comfortably live in those house , enjoy the beauty of sea and then
attack the Mumbai at their will.

Recently I had to purchase house in Mumbai. I met about two dozen
builders. Everybody wanted about 30% in black. A common person like me
knows this and with all your intelligent agency & CBI you and your
finance minister are not aware of it. Where all the black money goes? To
the underworld isn't it? Our politicians take help of these goondas to
vacate people by force. I myself was victim of it. If you have time
please come to me, I will tell you everything.

If this has been land of fools, idiots then I would not have ever cared
to write you this letter. Just see the tragedy, on one side we are
reaching moon, people are so intelligent and on other side you
politician has converted nectar into deadly poison. I am everything
Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian
Schedule caste, Creamy Schedule caste only what I am not is INDIAN. You
politician have raped every part of mother India by your policy of
divide and rule.

Take example of former president Abdul Kalam. Such a intelligent person,
such a fine human being. You politician didn't even spare him. Your
party along with opposition joined the hands, because politician feels
they are supreme and there is no place for good person.

Dear Mr Prime minister you are one of the most intelligent person, most
learned person. Just wake up, be a real SARDAR. First and foremost
expose all selfish politician. Ask Swiss bank to give name of all Indian
account holder. Give reins of CBI to independent agency. Let them find
wolf among us. There will be political upheaval but that will better
than dance of death which we are witnessing every day. Just give us
ambient where we can work honestly and without fear. Let there be rule
of law. Everything else will be taken care of..

Choice is yours Mr. Prime Minister. Do you want to be lead by one person
or you want to lead the nation of 100 Crore people?

By working better, improving our communication skills, our marketing abilities, adopting change as IT progresses, by reaching out to the students and installing 'reading habits', by making our libraries neater and the books more ordered. These are some thing just to begin with... there is no other way !

Dear all,

Many of you will agree on the fact that Librarians are not getting the same status as lecturers and other professionals in society. Since we all pusses same qualifications, same working conditions, pay scales etc. we deserve the same status which these other professionals enjoying. If we just take the example of our LIS teaching faculty, they are also treated differently than librarians. I think this is not fair.

Librarians should be considered as a faculty and should be given the same rights given to the teachers. Librarian should have right to represent in board of studied of LIS, he should be given a right to vote and choose his representatives in the board. Since librarian is a person who is actually working in the library he knows what knowledge one should pusses to be successful in LIS profession & what should be taught to new entrants.

Library professionals also should demand separate faculty like other professions e.g. Law, architect, Management, Medical etc. LIS should have its own dean who will represent us at higher level so that we can able to take our profession forward.

These are few things if we able achieve then I am sure it will make lot of difference in our status in the society. We are planing to start one movement to achive this, I want to know your opinion and views on that.

With regard

Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. It's customizable - so if you aren't interested in, say, entertainment or sports news, you can deselect them - and you can choose countries as well. Interesting to see how different stories have different interest/importance levels in different places.

Newsmap's objective is to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news; on the contrary, it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it.

New visualization tools - Tianomo Web discovery

Tianamo … web discovery is a type of search engine/display. Instead of displaying a list of likely matches in response to a search term, it creates a 3D topoographical surface map. You are presented with a series of mountains and valleys covered with labeled dots that represent the individual web sites turned up by the search. As you move the mouse over the map, a list of the sites in close proximity to the cusor is displayed in a separate window, and updated in realtime. What is most interesting is that some form of clustering or grouping algorithm is used to contextualize the search results. In theory, each mountain peak would represent a cluster of sites closely related, and the taller and more prominent ones would contain a higher number of sites with closest match to your search term. What is also neat is the ability to manipulate the surface by grabbing and turning, tilting, zooming in or out etc. Clicking on an actual dot takes you to the actual site, clicking on the side of a mountain narrows the search parameters etc. , and the inclusion of a chronology steps back in time and builds the topographic map dynamically showing the development over time.

Successful conduct of "Knowledge for all" - International Conference - Congratulations Dr.Muttayya Koganuramath

Dear Professionals,

I take this opportunity to Congratulate to Dr. Mutthayya.
Koganurmath and his team for successfully organizing the
International Conference on “Knowledge for All: Role of
Library & Information Centers”,
to commemorate ILA Platinum Jubilee Year 2008. I could be,
able to witness the deliberations and able to interact with
my other colleagues who had come from various places of India
and from abroad. All the delegates were really impressed by the
event and were praising Dr. Koganuramath and his team for
extending good hospitality. Indeed it is true that the event
was breathtaking one. Success can be achieved through the
efforts of the good team and the good leader leading the
same. Dr. Koganuramath takes such a keen interest in every
event to make it a grand success, howsoever small or big it
may be. The meticulously and judiciously prepared schedule
of the Conference itself is an evidence.

The LIS luminaries across India gathered and deliberated on
various range of LIS issues. This conference gave me an
opportunity to interact, share and exchange my views with
the great personlities of LIS profession. I am sure all the
participants also must have borrowed a lot from the conference
as they got an opportunity to witness the meaningful and thought
provoking deliberations of all FOUR (hectic) days as there were
about more than 100 papers presented in the conference.

This mega Conference was unique in many ways in real sense. All
the presentations were made by using PPT which was possible only
because of the state-of-the- art technology made available in
the conference hall. And Mumbai, being the commercial hub of
India , gave that cosmopolitan touch and flavor which an
International event requires.

I once again congratulate Dr. Koganuramth and I also congratulate
all the awardees of the Conference.

With Best Wishes,

Dr. Vidya Veeresh. Hanchinal.
