  1. We have been telling this for a quite a long time - that we are knowledge workers/ professionals. More than that we have to be knowledgable to help people grow. We are the super teachers and should be proud of what we are. Any L&I professional gathering you attend you get a feeling that we are a dejected lot? why? Knowing what we do not know is also Knowledge - and we have a habit of admiting that. So what really happens is the really learned respect us and people who are "so called learned" do not respect.

  2. Dear Mr.Suresh,
At the outset let me welcome you to the group of ILI folloowers. We wish you to be a part of the team of ILI contributors.
You are right..."the feeling that we are a dejected lot" is ample in our profession. It is just few glimpses of the level of our professionalism that get expressed unknowingly in our seminars and symposiums. We the librarians and scholar librarians have no time to know the reasons of the same. This requires Librarians to study litlle about a sujbect known as "Sociology of Professions" which addresses the issues like genesis of a profession, professionalism...etc. Our so called seniors and scholar librarians never except this as a subject for study. We refuse to acknowledge the importance of this study. As on date Librarianship is still consisered as an emerging profession.....never a full fledged profession. We refuse to study the results of such studies. At the same time we show our helplessness, dejection, frustration in all forums everywhere.......and acknowledge the fact that we are not professionals.....every where.......including our homes and friends. This is a proof of our duality of thinking and sature. Hope I am able to make my point clear Mr. Suresh. It is time we read research works of Prof.H.R.Chopra and P.K.Jaiswal. We may also find it interesting to read the books " Seven questions about librarianship". Thanks for raising my curiousities Mr.Suresh. Any way let us strongly believe that happy days are here ahead....sooner or later. Best wishes

  5. Nice to see the response. The problem I strongly feel is not with the non-availability of any studies - We do not outsell ourselves - we are a bit sobre and lack the aggressiveness which you find in many of the other professionals. The Library Schools around here are not able to sell the products (passed out students) to good employers. The Librarians need to explore new markets; bring in changes in the syllabi as required; L&I School teachers, Senior Librarians (who have a say in the society/ community) and Library Associations need to focus on to this problem.
